I find this Lewis Hines photo captivating. "One of the poorer country girls on the way to school". Her eyes look so guarded. Did her station in life ever improve? Did she know happiness / live a full life? Only have a surname, but trying to trace who she was. near Marlinton, Pocahontas County, WV, 1921 ~ This was her home. "This is one of the worst homes in the county. Mother said 'The colt kicked the winders out'. She is a no-'count mountaineer from Kentucky and her husband is a shiftless farmer who has let this farm run down to worthlessness. Typical of the worst conditions in the country." ~
todays kids could not live in those hard times Born in '49 we had hand me down clothes and lack of shoes but we survived
Yes those were tough times in rural America. My mother in law grew up in WV and spoke of mending the store owners socks for milk and getting an orange and small doll for Christmas one year as a young girl. My Dad was one of 12 and his parents passed when he was 10. He went to work in the coal mines and later WWII hit and he served his country. That generation knew how to survive. I enjoy seeing all the old photos on this site ...a great reminder of how it was ....thanks to all who contribute their pics.
Yes, and a proud member of the San Diego Roadster Club. Bob McCoy was a true “one of a kind” and a I was glad I could call him a friend.
