I was inspired by this in the early 70s and did a drawing...I will see if I can find it...I wonder when it was created...many times things are older than I imagine...

    Grade 9 probably 73/74...

1958 So Cal community car show. Goggle photo capture

    Hello,

When we were growing up in So Cal, there were the big time arena/auditorium car shows all over the metropolitan area. From the Orange Show Grounds in San Bernardino, to the Great Western Hall in the outskirts of downtown L.A. to the L.A. Sports Arena and to the Southern L.A. County shows in Long Beach, the Municipal Auditorium and in 1962-63, the new Sports Arena. Those were the big time places, along with the old Pan Pacific Auditorium in central Los Angeles back in the 50s.

But, sometimes, it was too long of a distance to go to those places, despite the want and need to see what hot rods and customs we saw in the magazines. So, our favorite shows were the neighborhood location ones in the our neck of LA County. They took place at the local high school parking lots, the athletic fields and even some shopping centers that allowed those shows to take up most of the parking areas.

The idea was to get people to come to the shows and then go shopping at the local strip malls or big name shopping centers. Similar to the cars and coffee events that take place in shopping centers all over So Cal, these days. A great example is billed as the largest Cars and Coffee weekly event held at the outlet center in San Clemente, just off of the I-5 freeway in south Orange County.

These may be the last of its kind with the fast spreading covid variants running rampant. When the pandemic first hit So Cal, the lock down was evident and the Cars and Coffee events disappeared due to the nature of the gatherings.

The photos above are a great example of the quality of customs and hot rods that were prevalent at the neighborhood parking lot/athletic field shows in So Cal. It was actually more fun as we knew of the high school fields and locations. The drive to those locations were within minutes from our stomping grounds in Bixby Knolls.

Sometimes, those customs and hot rods took the time to show their builds in between the big name shows that happened every year at those bigger, different style locations. That gave us quality builds and show cars that we could not see until the big car shows rolled into town.

His name escapes me but he should share his secret on the "keeping mice out of your cars" thread. It's easy, just keep the cars in the house.
