  2. Early on when the car still ran a sprung rear end. Later the rear end was bolted solid to the frame. A modification worth a second on ET's.

That be correct. Pic was taken 1957. My avatar always got second place to Freds car at every show it was entered.

  11. Since my father was a photographer by trade, I have literally thousands of "Vintage B&W Photos of Hot Rods & Customs" ... but here's a few more of his Deuce Coupe (thru the HAMB-friendly years):

    HEMI32 - 1954.jpg
1954 (Beach, North Dakota): Purchased car (less 4-banger engine) from original owner for $40

    HEMI32 - 1955.jpg
1955 (Beach, North Dakota): The beginnings of a HOT ROD ... channeled (6" in front, 8+" in rear) ... 1953 Chrysler 331ci HEMI ... etc.

    HEMI32 - 1957.jpg
    1957 (North Dakota) ... 2.5" chop

    HEMI32 - 1958 (1).jpg
1958 (North Dakota): Dad with his coupe
NOTE: This pic shows a bit of the interior (door panel) ... In 1956-57 my father served in the US Navy on USS Lexington (CV-16) ... While temporarily stationed at
NAS Alameda, he had the famous "C.A. HALL Auto Tops" shop in Oakland, California stitch up the black & white tuck & roll upholstery that remains in the car today!

    HEMI32 - 1964.jpg
1964 (John G. Mattos Elementary in Fremont, California): Molded (bobbed Model A) rear fenders … custom aluminum hood by

A question for historians: There were a bunch of rear engine Ts used at drag races and the dry lakes, plus a lot of early rear engine dragsters. Some of these are very well known, so were obviously successful. So why is Don Garlits credited with building the "first" successful rear engine dragster?

Good question. Let the experts weigh in.

Lifted the next two pics from this thread:

    desalvo_770x459.jpg

If I knew where I had lifted all these other pics, I would acknowledge them. Alas, I do not know.

This discussion probably belongs in another thread (yes please let's not get dragged into yet another attempt to define a hotrod), but since you dissed the Olsons' bitchin' hotrod I feel it is only fair to balance out your statement. You seem to be part of a rather large contingent who hold to a fairly rigid definition (no hood, no fenders, pre-1948, etc.), and we just have to respect that point of view.
But here's the counterpoint: there are a ton of classic hotrods with hoods, so many as to make the "no hood" part of the definition silly, IMO. Fenders . . . ok, fenders are much more rare on classic hotrods, this is a fact. Guess the East Coast boys weren't driving real hotrods.
Personally, I put the Olson car in the same class as the Collegiate Coupe or Yakel's . . . hot rods all (IMO). OK I feel better, now back to the program.
