VINTAGE 1960’s DRAG MOTOR COMPLETE PONTIAC 389 BORED 4.185 JE DOME PISTONS GASSER NOSTALGIA Very Rare Survivor Find… Here’s the story: Found at an auction… It looks like it was put together in the 1960’s. I had to outbid a scrapper who was just going to take it to the salvage / recycling yard. There was a unique finned WEIAND timing chain cover on it, so I figured it wasn’t just an old stock Pontiac motor. I tore it apart and found when they built it, they never put the one plug on the back of the motor that would seal the oil in the engine. I’m assuming they tried to fire the motor up and it didn’t hold any oil pressure, so they shut her down and never got back to making this project work right. I picked it up 7 years ago at an auction. Really great for an old GTO or Pontiac drag car. Have More Pics on My Photobucket page Engine Block: Casting Number: 536387 – 1960 Pontiac 389 Date Code: F 24 0 – June 24th, 1960 Original Cylinder Bore is 4.0625 / Bored out to 4.185 Bored .125 over (for more displacement) Fresh Hone done on a CV-616 Includes Motor Mounts Heads: Casting Numbers: 538177 (on both) Date Code: J 19 0 These were for the 1961 389 Engine 69cc Chamber 1.88 / 1.60 Valve Size Bathtub / Closed Chamber Heads (Great for Performance back in the day) Were hand ported back in the day. Valve Seats were touched up and Heads have been resurfaced Valves: Fresh grind on all the valves All Intake and Exhaust Valves included All 32 Valve Stem Keepers also come with it Valve Springs: Double Spring (has spring inside of the main spring) Aluminum Retainers (Lighter weight and innovative for its time) Crankshaft: Casting Number: 531369 Made by Arma Steel 3.75 Stroke Crank has the Mains ‘grooved’ which was an old school technique from back in the day where a groove was cut around the center of the mains to increase oil retention Camshaft: Iskenderian # 29321 / CC707 Orb 4 Looks like a custom made cam from Isky for this Race Engine Pistons: JE Pistons Part # 174 Old School Variety They look like Chrome Domes and were maybe polished by the engine builder Rods: Stock Pontiac Rods Bearings: Look good and usable Looks like they were fired one time No dings, imperfections, just slight wear Lots of life left in them Valve Covers: Stock Pontiac Valve Covers for a 389 Would really be nice to put a set of Mickey Thompson or Weiand finned Valve Covers to give it a true retro Drag Racing look Oil Pan: Original Oil Pan No Holes / Structurally Sound / No Leaks Oil Pump: Original Oil Pump Equipped with a Floating Pick-up Have never seen many of these Must have been a 60’s Performance Add-on Motor can be assembled.
