Vingage Air or Southern Air??????

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by alpo, Jul 9, 2011.

  1. I want to get some AC in my '34. Was thinking about going with Vintage Air but now leaning towards Southern Air. Any one have any experience with Southern Air and is it a ya or a na? Or Vintage air?? I guess it's mainly the evaporator unit under the dash and control units that's the main thing. All else is pretty much the same for both. Any opinions on either??

Used Vintage Air in my OT Camaro and would recommend two thumbs up. It was a sure fit, I haven't had air in a hot rod in some time but the last on was Vintage Air also.

Have used Vintage in 7 40 Fords and 3 trifive's--minimal problems and all work well--haven't tried any other brands.

Hot Rod Air is out of business.

  6. I have used Vintage in a '36 Ford Coupe that I sold in the mid 90s with no problems but just curious about other's thoughts.

I have used both without any problems.

  8. Like I said, I have used Vintage and never had any problems but was seriously looking at Southern Air. Kind of like their packages that they offer. Figure they are both pretty reputable.

We install and deal for Classic Auto Air. We used the others before but it seems that CAA has a lot more options and fits.

Is A/C traditional? I took the unit out of the car I bought because, with only the hood top,not sides, most of what you saw of my engine was air conditioning. OTOH, I do not live in Texas, though it is in the 90's today. Guess you'll have to decide.

PM me is you want to buy a nice used condenser cheaply.

I had Southern in a previous '40. Had issues with service and they were very friendly about fixing their mistake! Currently building a pickup and it doesn't have Southern!

One of these days I will pull the Southern Air out of my 46 and install Vintage Air. I have Vintage Air in my 53 F100 and it is SOOO much better than the Southern Air. I will say that the Southern Air unit is several years old, maybe they build it better today, but it was never good from the install. In my opinion, Vintage Air.

We used to install Vintage Air until we had a couple of kits show missing parts and the last two did not hold pressure. We had to open the factory case and saw that the internal fittings were not tight. Wouldn't have been a problem if the units were not already installed under a dash and done. Just a quality control issue I guess.

Southern Air components are made by the same company that made Hot Rod air components, and RV units.

Why would you want to install a system from a re-packager instead of a company that has engineered, tested and manufactured their own systems for over 35 years? The current VA systems (Gen IV) are the same technology that they put into the climate control systems they engineered and manufactured for the Ford GT.

Yeah, they're a couple of hundred more than SA, but what's $200 on $30K + car for the best product? But call both and have discussion about it before you buy.

BTW, ALL evaporators from VA are shipped with a nitrogen pre-charge, so any internal leaks would never pass shipping inspection. Just sayin'

(I do work with VA - but I also have installed several VA systems in my own cars)

We also used to sell and install only VA but two of them had an internal leak. I guess the outlet pipes that are connected inside the box came loose during shipping......
Not saying that the outlets were just dangling, but not even snug.;)

If you're an Alliance Member, 10% off Vintage Air through Hot Rod Garage and Kikin Streetrods. There's a start.

A friend installed a Vintage Air unit in his 57 Chevy pickup and had cooling issues. He called Vintage Air to see if they had any ideas and they offered to check out the air unit if he brought it to San Antonio. He was not able to take the truck down there so they had sent one of there employees to Oklahoma City to the NSRA show and had their guy go by his house and look at the truck. They found out that unit was not charged correctly.

  23. I've got factory air on my '32 pickup. I open the cowl vent and tilt out the windshield. Works like a champ.

Vintage air by a long shot!!! I have done both, and never will do anything but Vintage in a hot rod application again. And yes, I did say HOT ROD! To those that always look down their nose at those wanting to A/C their car, congrats on your good fortune to live in an area where it isn't a nessesity! As for my neck of the woods, no A/C means no hot rod fun for about 4 months out of the year. As for me, it's 118 in my shop today for the 10th day in a row, and I can go out and jump in my '48 and go anywhere I wish, as quickly as I wish, safely and comfortably... Sounds like a win win deal!

    Ain't it the truth!!
These dudes that live in 70 degrees shouldn't even post replies on A/C or radiators.
In Texas, A/C is above everything-eating fried butter, assulting livestock, shooting bambi's, -even porn.
    Well, maybe not Shiner.
