I don't think I've seen this video on the HAMB (if it has been posted I am sure someone will tell me.......)

Black & white, a Chevy commercial, it puts a 1963 Chevy side-by-side with a 406 Ford of the same year. While it does not say '409' or '406' it does say the cars are equipped with 'factory performance engines, transmissions and axles' and the Chevy has a 'W' motor. It does seem strange that both cars are plain-jane 4 doors.

Reminds us of something you see at the drags when someone does not want to "break out" of their dial in. ;)

You can see both front and rear doors on the Chevy and on the interior shot of the Chevy driver look behind his shoulder - you will see a door lock, as for the Ford, I don't know my Ford body styles for that year but it looks 4-door to me.

Per the NHRA Classification Guide and 1963 NHRA rulebook....

1963 Ford Galaxie 500 4dr sedan w/406-405 4-speed had a shipping weight of 3904 lbs and would have run B/Stock by 1963 rules.

1963 Chevrolet Impala 4dr sedan w/409-425 4-speed had a shipping weight of 3604 lbs and would have been running Super/Stock by 1963 rules.

The 300 lb lighter Chevrolet should have won by several car lengths.

  14. nice post ther Dave.....must have been more tha one drag out - the one far side shot shows no Vette leading the way....and...

I notice there was no Super Stock Plymouth or Dodge Ramcharger Max Wedge 426 in the race.

Actually the front end usually drops when you shift gears, seems like it did on both cars.
Doesn't really matter that was a long time ago. And a Chevrolet ad.

Great video. Maybe the 4 doors were for all the overstuffed ad executives to get a ride out to the shooting location. :)

  24. I have been a diehard Chevy car guy since a teen.......its just my way....but I do like a lot of other cars.......I like the early Fords.......lots of style and performance .........its some of the Ford owners that twist my crank ....talk to them about a Chevy and its like throwing Holy water on the devil ........now that should get the rivalry stirred up:D. Hey thanks for the video.

Ford chose the services of a professional driver, maybe he was a truck driver.

Chevy awarded the driving to Detroit resident and part-time car salesman Sonny Bono. Who won the honors guessing how many 409 pistons were in a 55 ga. drum at the dealership he was moonlighting at.

That's the way I heard it anyways.....

I've watched this video about 10 times but I still don't see the front of the ford drop until the first shift.
