Wow thanks for posting Marcus. I can definatley appreciate the local history. I never knew the original speed shop was next door to Al's, I work across the street at Maier racing.

  7. Marcus, Thank you. When I was a young whip I pushed my nose through the chainlink at Fremont. These were some very cool video/8mm from back in the day. Wish I could remember more. I have a Fremont jacket and a copy of a Headhunters plaque in my shop. How weird. Kindred spirits(along with our 34's)

  8. My father shot all the photographs in the "MARINE EQUIPMENT" section of the 1968 Vic Hubbard Speed & Marine catalog ... Here's the cover and inside front cover of that catalog:

  9. Here's some pics of the Denny & Jerry Forsberg / Al Hubbard "Vic Hubbard Speed Shop" '35 Austin Bantam Altered:

First time out with the Austin and the Olds engine

The driver's compartment of the Austin: everything from
the bell housing to the steering assembly was hand
fabricated by Jerry and Denny at York's after work.

Al Hubbard, Denny, and Bob Zarth (of 'Purple Death' fuel additive
fame); this picture shows the roadster's dropped front axle and low
height built for the gasoline Olds engine. Denny and Jerry did not
want a lot of weight transfer (shown with Al's Chevy engine).

The Austin in B/FAR trim with straight front axle and raised spring perches.

Awesome pics and info. I grew up in san lorenzo, next to hayward, and have frequented both vic's, and al's shops. My grand father's car club, The Toppers of alameda has a plaque on hubbards wall which is still there to this day. I found this sticker on ebay for a buck. I have it above my tool cart.

    Thanks,

The early Mustang engine in my roadster pictured below and in my avatar was built at the Al Hubbard shop in Hayward on Meekland Ave. in the early '90s. Great engine! I drove shit out of it until I decided to replace it with the '50 Cad. that is in my roadster now. I sold it to a friend about ten years ago. It's still stored away in one of his many garages. He said he would sell it back to me at the same price. Thinking I might install it in my recently acquired 62 Falcon.

This video is outstanding, it starts and ends at Fremont (you push-started down the track), then shifts to Lions...the shots at and after the 3:00 mark are at Pomona.

    THANKS FOR POSTING!!!

Again, priceless video, mostly from the '59 Smokers meet at Bakersfield, lots of famous cars (Garlits, Chrisman, Lefty, Singer and Miller, etc), and lots of not-so-famous cars, which I like in particular.

  19. I am digging this thread on so many levels. Great pics and footage Marcus. I was so born in the wrong era. Looks like they were having so much fun. If only it could be so simple today. I long for a dragstrip were we could build simple cars like that and run balls out.

Very cool history! I grew up in the midwest but always new the Vic Hubbard name from all the ads.

I have a question. I see Jerry Light was the founder but who was Vic Hubbard? Unless I missed it somewhere in the thread which is very possible.

Vic was Jerry's stepfather and owned an automotive repair shop.

...of course thirty years ago Maier was down the street and around the corner in the Quonset hut...can't remember what street that was...Bill and Mike have gotten a modest chunk of my money over the years...I really need to get the '65 convertible mobile and over for a rollbar...

Maybe so...my memory of the exact location isn't all that great. I'd thought it was on one of the side-streets off Meekland circa 1978.
