The car run at the CHRR was Veney's first Funny Car. It ran a best of 8.13 back in the day (1972). Veney went on to build 3 more cars. Slick Vic ran 8.06 at 165 Sunday.

Gasserjohn This brings back old memories of Dragway42 West Salem Ohio in the early 70s. Ken Veney Lived in a small town up the road from there and used to bring that car there to run in the old Stroh's Beer sponsered races held there.
Wow cool,...I did not know this thread existed till I googled..lol Here is the chronogical order and ETS of the 4 Veneys Vegas that Ken Veney and Ken Cox built between 1972 and 1976..... #1) Obviously the one I have was the first of the four Vega`s that was built in 11 weeks at the cost of $8,000.00, and had a best E.T. of 8.03 I am came close to breaking it with the 8.06@165, I thought the record was 8.13 but I talked to Ken on tuesday and set the record straight,..I will get .0300ths chump change,..anyways this car dominated the 1972 season running in the Injected Funny Car Circuit out of California. #2) This car debuted in 1973,.a brand new car with wheel bubbles and the motor out 4 inches further, also a bbc stack injected but now on Nitro, mostly 30-40 % but in the finals this car would see as much as 70% its best et of 1973 was 7.01 in july at Seattle at the end of the 1973 season Ken Veney did not build a new car but instead cut the flat nose off of the 1973 car and graphed on a 1974 nose onto the same 1973 bodywithe the still 1973 chassis, and also added a blower to the BBC, this car would haul the mail and would be the first BB/FC into the sixies running a 6.98@199 with a best of 6.94 #3) This would be the 3rd car that was built brand new and was built for the 1975 season,..this is the car in the American Nitro Movie that breaks the Mph record with a 212mph and ran as good as 6.71 with a Kieth Black Hemi. #4) This would be the last Of the Veneys Vega funny cars that ran the 1976 season and most dominate car,..this season would be Veneys last for almost two years due to the fact that Veney won the 76 season, but he would not be rewarded for his domination and that did not sink in to well with Ken. Best E.T. of 6.68 @ 211 unconfirmed.
Always loved all of Ken Veney's cars. Glad to see that Vic got the original Veney's Vega back going. Kevin Ooltewah Speed Shop
And that about brings us to end end of when F/C's actually looked like cars we could recognise. Great job BTW.
I believe the car Veney ran in his successful 76 season was bought by Dave and Phil Sebring .It was repainted blue and ran under the Justice Brothers Banner for a few years. Dave was a top notch shoe and fairly successful with it. Campaigning in BB/FC around Ohio and the east .Last I heard of the car it was still around the Kent Ohio area.
LowKroozer,...... Actually Veney sold the 1976 car to Frank Hawley who ran it in 77 and 78 then it was sold to Barry Payton and he ran it in 1983/4 only. Hawley 1977 PopShoppe 1978 MidTown Automotive then the car was parked for 3 years, and Barry Payton bought it from Hawley, and cut the round headlights out of it and installed cavileer or citation type headlight buckets in it so it would look like a 83 cavileer or something for that year,... The 76 Vega was then sold to a guy in 1985, who was going to put his wife in and run it as a B/EA, the gentlman died, and the women passed in 89, and now the current owner has it for now 20 years, and awaits on me to come and get it. Vic
Here's a couple of pics from '73 or '74 from Fresno Dragways. Venny's Vega made several appearances there. He was pretty much unbeatable in the alcohol fc class.
Hey Dan,..thanks for the pic,..this would be 1972. the vega wagon is not even decked out yet with the mag wheels and Veney Logo on panel window. cool,.... Vic The 1975 Veneys Vega became the Sebring/Justice Bros car. My Son Riley and I have just finished up a 6 week mid west/ east coast tour with the Veneys Vega Our best times at the various tracks are as follows.... The former Barry Payton car has been purchased by a freind of mine and is nearly ready for action,I will be doing the body in the New Year.BBC on alky for now but bigger things are sure to come!!!!
Yes I am aware of Pat,..and his reincarnation of the the 76 Ken Cox Vega. Barry Patton was the last to drive it but as you can see the car is originally the 1976 Veneys Vega, then it was Frank Hawleys two versions and then Barry Pattons with the morphed 4 headlight arrangement. Hope the car turns out better than its current plan,..!!!!!
