Veitnam Memorial Wall facts by my Dad nam vet retired U.S.M.C.

Have helped set-up the traveling Wall twice, can't make myself look at the 72 section. Just can't stand the thought of finding a name of someone who I knew and was there after I left. Want to believe they all came home OK.

Few years back made it to Angelfire in New Mexico. Talk about a spiritual place. Felt a presence around me that to this day I can't start to describe or understand. Bawled like a baby, first time my wife ever saw me like that. Left there with a sense of healing that I didn't even realize I needed. Will visit it again if given the chance...........

 

Thanks for the original post and thank your father. I have never thought about the families of the guys in Guam and there feelings of the war, thanks for that post also. I have seen the traveling wall a couple times, and had a hard time, I hope to someday make it to the real thing. As a combat medic with the 82nd airborne a few of those names are very close to my heart, as is the high school classmate, who's body I escorted home. As it was almost thirty years before you wanted to tell anyone your were there, I to want to say let's not let that happen to our troops coming home now.

I am not insulted in the least. I'm glad this guy has the patriotism and the pride in his old man's service to his, and my, country to post this for the rest of us to read and reflect on.

Wasn't the 442nd one of the most highly decorated outfits in the ETO? Also including a CMOH awarded to a future state senator?

As a child growing up, memorial day was always a solemn occasion for my father. When I was younger I didn't really understand why he didn't want to go out and celebrate the holiday and BBQ with the rest of the family. I knew he was a veteran, a Huey gunship pilot in Viet Nam, but I never knew much about his service until I asked. I still remember the Memorial Day we talked about some of what he did. Some of the missions he flew and the friends he lost. It was hard for him and we have never really talked about it again. I know he feels guilty for returning when so many of his brothers didn't. Tomorrow morning I will call him and tell him I love him and that I hope he has a good day. I know he will be thinking of his comrades, as I will, and as you should. Even if we don't know their names. Remember them...They paid the ultimate price for our freedom and they live on in our hearts and our minds.

I live less than 30 miles from the wall. I have never had the nerve to go there. I want to go but I'm afraid of meeting a guy that went through the Tet offensive. I was older due to an apprenticeship deferment. I was 23 when uncle called. I feel so guilty I had the easiest time of any
Viet Nam veteran that actually served.

 

To all of those "forever Young" who sacrificed everything in service to our Country,.... Those I knew, and all the others I know paid the price,... I will not forget you. And I am so grateful to you all.

Nixon abolished the draft the year I became eligible; 1972.

I am certain I would not be alive today if I had been drafted.

I think the best way America can show respect for all that made the ultimate sacrifice is to use war ONLY as a last resort when all other options have been exhausted.

I've posted this around a bit this weekend, but just as a refresher, it is not the weekend to thank a veteran. That is November 11th this year. To thank or otherwise honor a living veteran is to diminish the sacrifice made by those honored dead who gave their last full measure of devotion for country and countrymen. This is the day to honor those who died in battle, and only those who died in battle.
This is about keeping the day of recognition true to its intended purpose, and not diluting our culture the way most things are where they are allowed to mean whatever someone wants them to mean.
So please, from this veteran, don't thank other veterans today, say a prayer for those who gave their all for you. Go ahead and party, but how about just taking a few short seconds out of your day to say a few words, or to lift a glass (or can) to honor them...

I will close this and say a prayer for all the fallen men and women that paid the highest sacrafice, thier life for our freedom. Amen !

 

Unfortunately this is typical of many people's opinion of our involvement there. They miss the fact we need to solute the men and women who served there.

The Vietnam War was not our life, just an important chapter in our life.
people often ask themselves, why all of these men and women gave their lives
for the United States of America, when it became apparent the military would not be allowed to win the war. I believe the answer is, in part, that we fought and died for each other. Sleep the restful sleep my brothers.

I had to regester for the draft in 1973, I had a different view back then, as I got older my views change drastically. I have nothing but the utmost respect for all of our serviceman and I do not take for granted the sacrifices that they gave to give me the freedom to do and say what I want and I want to thank your father and all of the servicemen in this country for keeping us free.

It is always surprising to me how many get Veterans Day and Memorial Day mixed up- both honor Veterans but for such totally different reasons- even our Pastor at Church yesterday is confused and thanked us- the living Veterans at service- the day is not for the living but to honor those that died in battle as you said in your post-
