Sorry to pick at the Evil-bay scab, but has anyone bought a Vega box from the sellers on Evilbay?

They have them pretty reasonable and are represented as new, and they're not that much more than most are asking for them used.

I'm looking at $139 for one delivered, but wanted to ask if you guys had any experiences with them.

    Thanks!

I bought one on e bay for my T coupe project.installed it and it works fine.Looks like a quality piece. They said it was all new built ,looks new but ya never know, if so it was probably made in Japan like everything else these days. LOL.

It's rather hard to tell without some indication of vendor or ebay listing number. You just need the listing number and not the whole link.

I looked through the first ten or so listings and haven't done business with any of the vendors there.

I wouldn't shop just on price alone for the main steering component. Get the brand name and all info before you buy.

Unfortunately, cost is a HUGE factor for me, and I can't afford to spend the $300+ Flaming River wants, or what others want as well. Just for comparison's sake, I called my local O'reilly's Parts store and talked with my buddy who's the manager there, and a remanufactured one is $123... but the kicker is the $75 core charge makes it up over $200 with tax.. and it doesn't come with the pitman arm either.

I hate it, but the prices do unfortunately dictate what I can or can't do. I've been saving for awhile to gather up the $250 I'm about to spend on this thing, and I've got to make the money stretch as far as I possibly can.

Once I have the steering and brakes on it, I'm not too far away from starting it up and making it run! Just a bit of wiring, and other small things, and I'm in business.

Anyway... Of the two that I've been looking at:

    Here's one... he's got several for $154 delivered: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NEW-...ptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

Here's the other one - His is $139 Delivered: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...0643474075&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK:MEWAX:IT

I would only use 'brand name' stuff for brakes and steering,I've seen some of the crap that's 'questionable' and wouldn't put it on any of my cars.
If a few hundred dollars is going to make or break the build then I'd be inclined to wait until I'd saved the extra.
Costs a little more now but could save your life.

I bought one from gearheadworld off of their website. It looks fine to me, and I haven't crashed yet. :) Of course, the car's not finished and driveable yet either. :(

Other HAMBers have reported some problems with gearheadworld stuff, but I don't see a problem with this steering box - yet.

  12. I'm in the same shape. I've decided on the borgeson vs the flaming pile, while the borgeson is more than I want to spend, I don't want to AND can't afford to do it twice. For the $100 difference, I hope to save the aggravation of not being able to adjust a chinese box and buy the borgeson since it is made in the US.

  13. I don't think there is much made in Japan these days. ;)

    Gotz,
There is a company the manufactures new vega boxes. I don't know who they are but I do know that Summit sels new vega boxes so I have to guess that they are not the only people that can get them

I don't know about the E bay sellers so I can't give you any info on them but a new vega box runs in the 150-200 range from a retailer if that is any help.

  14. Gearheadworld, is that the one in Iowa? One of those guys is the back door of Chassis Engineering, I bought motor mounts from them, that name rings a bell. Came in a plain box with CE instructions, price wise was $10 or $20 cheaper and the shipping was a better deal. Only issue I had was they marked it as shipped about a week before it actually went out, then kind of BS'ed me when I asked about it until they actually had a tracking number to give me.

  15. Here is the summit ad and a link to the page. The cheapest summit boxes are saginaw boxes.

I've purchased and used 2 vega boxes from e-bay. They both worked great. mine were the box, plate & pitman arm for around $190.00 variety.

    Gotzrider,

I just bought one from a guy on there. Vega box, pitman arm, and bracket already welded for $159 shipped from rodparts1234. I called and talked to the guy. (800)373-5773 Hope this helps. I can understand trying to build on a budget. Im doing the same thing.

I just checked out the Summit site and went through the entire shipping process to estimate total price and delivery. Ground shipping is free, so that's not too bad, but once you add the Pitman Arm to the deal, plus 'handling charges', it winds up being $227 and change with the Pitman Arm on BACKORDER.

I know building on a budget - and anyone who's followed what I've done with my project thus far has seen - I can buy things on a deal. However, with the fact that my wife took a $30k pay cut when we moved, finding parts and deals isn't as easy as I'd like. My project has been sitting on the back burner due to finances, and just as a reference - I was finally able to catch up the skipped house payment we used for Christmas last year this month. It sucks I know, but it is what it is. So, putting back to wait for another $100-500 extra to put into something like a steering box that is essentially the same as what everyone else makes - but to pay more for someone's big name on it - does make a huge difference to my build. I hate the fact that I can't find one that is original around here without buying the car for $800 first to get it.

I'm glad there are a few on here who have bought from the guys I've mentioned, and glad they've had decent results. Its a shame that people are driven this direction by those super expensive boxes in order to save money. I'm hoping to achieve great results with mine, as I'm building it as a daily driver, and plan to drive it 10 months (or more) out of the year, and work is a 55 mile round trip for me.

I had an actual vega box on my car and it was in need of a rebuild so when my motor was out of the car, I bought one of the ebay ones, like you are talking about. No difference, and it seems to be holding up fine...

i've used them on 2 cars, they work OK, i'll probably swap out the last one eventually for a nicer box, the other one is on a car i sold or i would probably swap that one out also

i don't mind swapping it out and having a box lying around for future projects if you plan to keep the car for an extended period of time i'd probably get a paper route and save up the difference between the cheap box and a good box and just take one dip and end it.

Make sure you check them out real good, I had a pitman arm crack through the hole before I was even able to bring it to torque! Surprised me that something so critical would fail so quickly.

I bought a replacement arm that was forged and Made in the USA and no problems!

Not a steering box, but I've bought from "Pirate Jack" and don't have any thing bad to say about them. The second guy I've never dealt with.
That's about all I've got on this.

  23. I have a vega box that was pulled out of salvage yard car. its a tight gear with lots of adjustment left, no rough spots in it. Its sandblasted and includes pitman arm $100 plus shipping if anyones interested?

I questioned the seller of the 'cheaper' box and arm about the brand name and where it was manufactured and received this response:

    Dear XXXXXXXXXXX,

It is made by Remy (Delco-Remy) in Brazil. 1 year warranty as long as you don't try to "adjust" it. These are really nice!

  25. Of course, if you have a wrecking yard nearby, you could always go prowl to see if some other box will do the job for you and just buy that. The u-pick here gets like $20 for them. For that price if it doesn't work you can about put it on eBay yourself and make a few bucks on it.

I have purchased three new Vega boxes with the brackets from a vendor in Hudson, IA. No problems. Also the vendor does have a follow up system if one chooses to use it. Top quality merchandise at very reasonable prices.

I am in same position. Need to buy a box for my 32 sedan, and don't understand difference in price for same box. There is one sold by Thompson Garage for 345. The pic is the same as the box sold by Speedway for 199. Description is also the same.
Many other boxes are sold from 139/159. Rockauto sells a rebuilt Vega at around 250$, rebuilt by a reputable company as Lares.
What to choose? Flaming River is out of question, too many horror stories about them.
    Thank you for the input
