I don't know about elsewhere, but here in Washington vanity plates are like regular plates; they have to be renewed every year, plus you get to pay a premium on top of that for the vanity... also every year. Too expensive; Historical plates are a one-time expense (same with YOM plates) that don't have to be renewed, much cheaper in the long run...
Some vanity plates are unique, but if you follow one for miles and you still cant figure what the hell it means , those are just annoying.

I had IDRAG on my Cobrajet for about 20 years then a 5.0 ot car LOL. When I finally sold the 5.0 and was moving out of conus a local racer from the same town tracked me down through my ex and begged for me to sell him the plate as they stayed with the owner not the car. Said he had watched the CJ winning through it's years on the track and wanted the plates bad. Considered keeping them for awhile then realized it may be some time if I ever made it back to the USA so I gave them to him for free because he was a successful FORD drag racer in his own right and said they would never end up on any GMC product LOL. It actually wasn't my first choice I tried to get without luck as someone already had them, IRACE, IWIN, DRAG , RACE, and SCJ 428 all were taken.
Plymouth turns 400 in 2020 so they came out with Commemorative Plates After being told I could "not" pick my number by the RMV,because it is not a Vanity plate . I called back a few times and finally got a sweetheart on the phone . She checked the number,,, ,Its still out there ! But she couldn't find what registry it was at .She asked me for my phone number and said she would call me back next week ! I laughed at her and said there was NO WAY the Registry of Mass was going to call little old ME back .She did ,and the plate was sent to my RMV in Plymouth 4 weeks later ! The funny thing is ,people still ask, What year is it ?
