Technical Valve spring measuring?? - Flathead 8BA

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by cederholm, Aug 6, 2018.

  1. The old trick was to use less spring pressure on the exhaust valves than on the intakes. This was supposed to make exhaust valve exhaust valve float set the RPM limit. You can hear valve float on the exhaust. (It is still not a bad idea, since with today's gas you can get valve seat recession on the exhaust valves if the spring pressure is too high.)

I cut down on cam wear by not using adjustables .another good thing is you can rev it quicker and at less spring pressure for a given rpm .Use stellite #3 and build up the tops of the lifters then grind down to suit gap.Set and forget ..

Identify your parts before doing anything! Almost all replacement valve stuff sold in sets nowadays is '49-50 stuff, using same springs as earlier engines and of course fitting LZ springs.
Late engines, certainly '52-3, not sure of exact cut off use different spring lengths and hardware. You are unlikely to get these late parts unless you requested them, but be sure before you measure spring lengths.
