They might be in the same family but maybe more like dad and son rather than brothers

In this pic the hubs drums and backing plates I pulled are in the corner- going to mate the hubs to Buick drums-

Now- I have the option of putting in a narrow ford 9" or the 63 olds rear. I really like the olds rear and I have one I'm putting in my roadster... But it would rule to have a locker-

The guy I bought the 9" rears from has a center section with a Detroit locker CHEAP...

The other one is a bronco 9" similar width to the 57 ford- I bought two of these Broncos (one not pictured) because they were priced so cheap-

So I have options I guess... Detroit locker 9" ford Or an olds rear-

I could find a posi unit for the olds down the road but man they're getting spendy-

If you are going to do 9", why not find a '66-earlier dimple back housing, and fill the dimples so it looks like an early smooth back housing?

I'm still struggling with figuring out what I need to run Buick drums. It looks like you're using '46-'48 passenger car hubs separated from the drums?

Do you know if '51 F1 hubs would work? I have a couple leads on F2 and F3 backing plates so I can have Bendix braking power. I just need to decide whether the F1 hubs I have are the way to go or not..

@Tuck what are the widths of the 9" vs the Olds?

  14. @Tuck you're on a roll, great to see all these parts that fit this build so well, going to be very cool.

46-8 hubs- you machine them down with a lathe or brake lathe and fit them in the opening of the buick drum.
    Buick Drums- 48 fin preferred
12" backing plates- so if you run 40 ford backing plates you need to remove a little material from the drum so they don't rub.

You want to do this? I can help ya- I'll take pics of my setup as I do it.

@-Brent- the 9"'s are 54 1/2" flange to flange- the olds is 55 1/2 flange to flange. One inch difference.

    @Drewfus thanks man- (-:

@Tuck - I assume you're running the 5x5" on the back if you run the Olds?

@-Brent- yeah I'm leaning towards running the olds and there are two good 15" 5x5 b/c steel wheels on the donor car.

Here's the actual carbs- (not the ones from my hemi ).

I'm thinking of putting kits in these and running them. Carbs were in better shape than anticipated the bases are painted- butterfly's are clean- I'll pull the emulsion tubes and give them a good once over and let them buck-

@dmorago It's just the tops that make them look like this- carbs are standard Stromberg 97 or 48's.

There were some flow tests done- the 97's no real improvement but there is a flow improvement running the 48 body! I think the key to using these is to run them on Stromberg 48's. They're more than a little hard to find though... I stumbled across a few but that's because of the horse shoe up my ass... (-; not everyone is into them.

I'm running six on the drag star on my hemi- I still need to spend about 400 in parts to finish refinishing those carbs and the back part of the linkage- almost done restoring that intake- all the small parts are done. Will have this finished this winter!

Notice this hub is tapered except where the studs go though- limits you to the 5x5.5 b/c

    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1439341063.701747.jpg

@TexasSpeed here are the 46-8 hubs I bought- turned down the diameter to fit the Buick drum on the brake lathe- then they sit flat on the drum- from here I use a drill guide to drill to whatever bolt pattern I want-

I drill and tap the hub and use bolts for the studs.
This one though I'll use napa 641-1145 longer press in studs because I'm using the 5x5.5 bolt pattern-

This is a flat 46-8 hub... its the same year as the one above but different- its flat and thick all the way around. If you look at the hub above its tapered except where the studs go though. This hub is the one you want if you want to go to chevy or ford bolt circle. This one is for my roadster. @TexasSpeed - if you want to send me the hubs and drums I'll do this for ya and send em back.
