Drums need relief around the inside lip typically just like you would on the fronts. Seem to line up great- really stoked on this conversion! (-;

Just for the record the first time I built this car I thought I had a pair of 12" backing plates off a wagon. The backing plates measured 12" but when you got the brake internals in they were only 11"... I looked and looked for 12" backers that would fit this and this was the best option. I had them, they match the fronts and the offset for the rear zephyr brakes are the same as the stock olds backers- and the aluminum drums are a big upgrade.

 

So I did some rendering on a napkin, on steel- snapped a pic and then in CAD-



then dropped some steel on the plasma table down the road-





Made some mid brackets for the x-member and then press braked the ends.


I didn't have a piece of tie rod so I threw in this bone which looks cooler- just shows the torque arm for the rear bones.

Always enjoy seeing your approach to building a chassis. Lots of measuring and sitting back and thinking what if...

Trying to take a bit of that into our A build with out over complicating it for myself.

Glad to see some progress, sorry Sarah and I never caught back up to you in Austin. That was our first time to the round up and I had my head spinning lol

 

@Tim thanks man- was good seeing you at the LSRU... Been so long! Yeah maybe we can hang at fifties? I think we're still recovering from our trip... (-;

 

Yeah it's been way to long, I'll have to wait and see about 50's but weirder things have happened.

Man I still laugh thinking about the last time I hung out with you guys there haha.

Made some more progress- welded in wings I made to brace the x-member side to side. Did some more welding on the chassis- finished the rear Lincoln brakes- more to come!!

Getting ready for our swap meet tomorrow- if any of you guys are local you should come! It's a historical event having a swap in Pine City! (-;

I want to keep documenting this- so I had a few hours last week and a few hours this weekend to work on the roadster.

Roughed in motor mounts- front mounts I'm making into a cross member that hugs the pan, rear mount bolts to the back of the lasalle trans so the weight of the motor is sitting in the rails in the later pics with the body on it.
I trimmed out the body and fit it. I played a lot with stance. Originally the plan was to have this sitting lower in the rear- but- in the pic is where It needs to be. I think this will work out great because I plan to make a curved body line from the cowl line below the door (like a flare) and back and fill the wheel wells. Sort of like a small rocker-

It'll get a chrome roll bar - small one that will come though the rear panel behind the seat, flowing hedders that'll merge into side pipes and small quadrant-circle or ninety degree arc cycle finders that cup the slicks in the rear.

There's a pretty long list of loose ends to button up but now that I have it all mocked up I can work on my pedals, steering column and other small projects.

I was checking out your work on the Lincoln backing plates. I'm using early 60's buick on my 9 inch. I need to open the center hole up a tad, then plug the 4 holes and re-drill for the ford bolt pattern.

Are you running buick drums too? I ran the 12" Lincolns because I had them and its getting hard to find 60's anything in yards around here. I thought I found a set of 12" buick / olds wagon brakes that would bolt up to the olds rear but they didn't work- they were 12" but the brake surface was 11"- so I was like screw it. The Lincolns were close enough and looked good so I made up those rings and drilled. There was only a little relief work on the drums.

I'm curious about the 9" because I want to upgrade my ranchero to 12" drums with wider pads like the buicks... I haul so much with it that I want it to stop as good as it pulls.

Thanks Rick- man that looks like a pretty straight forward way to go on the rears- now I just need to figure out the fronts. The backing plates are not typical ford looking plates up front on a 59 ford- I was thinking I could cut two plates at the same diameter and tig them together.

 

Squared away the ball mount and bones- used a model a spreader upside down to sweep the bones up and keep the mount on the same plane as the bottom of the X-member. Heated and bent the rear spring hangers so they match the spring angle.

I like to repurpose old ford parts so I used the front part of the bones I cut off to triangulate the rear bones- everything is just tacked together but it all lines up pretty good. Just need to triple check everything and I'll weld it all up.

 

Made a torque arm for the bottom- I'm not sure that I need it but going with the idea it's better to overbuild than under... here it is- z'd torque arms- which allow for seat room! (-;

I had made extra tabs to make a tie rod style torque arm- decided to mock it up it uses bone end brackets and bolts to tabs I made from model a bone heads- threaded the one end that is tapered 60 degrees-

This would resolve the torque vectors coming down through that top tube and beef up the bones forward of the mid point-

If they fail after this oh well- we learn from trying and failure right?

Ok- I can't leave anything alone- I triangulated the bottom bar it almost touches at the very front... and shortened both bars a bit purely to satisfy aesthetics... adding offset that flows with the kick- looks way cooler! Now I'm stoked- plan to gusset the front spreader. This thing chrome is gonna look RAD! (-:
