Ok, this is a stupid tech thread but what the hell, probably not my last. I am running Towel City cheaters in the rear and a set of American Classic bias looking tires up front. They needed a personal touch so here goes.

Using a 400 grit sanding pad on a air sander I removed the logos from the front tires. Don't use too much speed or it melts the rubber, about quarter trigger will do it.
    upload_2018-4-26_20-30-55.png

I followed that up with a little 180 by hand and then some 1000 to polish it back down.
Next the time consuming process of removing all of the rubber "hair" from the sidewall with needle noses and a razor blade. Using a non petroleum cleaner the side walls were scrubbed clean.

I mounted the tires on my roller seat so I could spin them around easier.
    upload_2018-4-26_20-36-3.png
Next up, a bunch of letters I ordered on line. These are normally white letters out so they had to cut them in reverse to accommodate my blackwall idea.

The application of the letters requires some adhesive supplied. I laid out the letters, found the center using the air valve for reference and glued them down. It needed to be at least 60 degrees and we happened to get some 70 degree good stuff the last couple of days.

You can see the letters have a white outline that has to be dealt with. I decided to glue them on and then paint them black on the tire to avoid contaminating the back of the letters and negatively effecting adhesion.

This is the result. You can see a hint of the white outline below.

Next step, paint them. I found some spray on tire paint locally that was way to shiney for my personal taste. After I applied a light coat I realized I was going to have to fix that. In my can crate I found a flat black can of rustoleum that is oil and fuel resistant. It was just the ticket.

Final step was a liberal dose of armor all and a wipe down. Here is the results

It aint for everybody but they are unique for my ride and cooler than were before.
Tread Wear is the company that supplied the letters right down to the "f" shield.

Dumb tech thread of the day!

    Very nice work. Love it.
The first time I sanded/polished tire lettering was on a friend's hopped up street car that he used for street racing. It had non DOT drag tires (McCreary's?) out back that were raised lettered with "Not for street use". We polished off the word "not" so they read "for street use". He got stopped once and the cop gave the car a slow vehicle equipment lap, took a close look at the tires, then green flagged him on, lol.

Ok, than. Your homework assignment for tonight (if you have to go to work) is to set aside 2 hours and read the thread "cover to cover". Or, if you're retired like some of us, do it now. You won't regret it.

I sanded the "Coker Classic" letters off my rear tires, but have never heard of the lettering you added. That must be some adhesive. I did get a an amazed comment about the Sears "Allstate" front tires the other day at a cruise!

  26. Neat tyres! You can also use Scotchbright discs in an electric drill to remove the writing. Makes a bit of a mess, but you can do a couple of tyres in about half an hour.

I love this! Where did the letters come from, and what did you use to glue them? I really want to hear more details, this could be very useful.
