I remember going to Town's Edge Oldsmobile in Hopkins, MN with my dad in 1957 to look at new cars. There was a 98 Holiday Coupe sitting right outside the front entrance, and I immediately asked the salesman if I could sit in it. Knowing the old man was probably going to buy a car, he said "Sure, go ahead". It was at night and the instrument lights were on. I got in and was instantly mesmerized; it was like sitting in the cockpit of a fighter plane to me.

The old man bought a 4 door sedan.:(

  11. I am actually more a fan of these than the Chevrolet's...maybe because you don't see as many. I do think the only one I have actually owned was an old 56 Pontiac drag car, but would like to have another someday if I found the right deal. Thanks for posting some great examples!

Here are the two I owned. LOVED driving them both. The Olds was a bit "cartoonish" I sold it before I could clean it up, some hipster from Austin boutght the Buick, saw it a few years later for sale on CL down around Corpus, with the usual lies about all the "new things the owner had done to the car. Put a 54 Pontiac grille in the Olds, wish I had better pics of it. Both were great cars with awesome engines. They ate up the road.

Here is my Buick. Although not sure when I’m going to get to it. Came with a 425 in the trunk. [IMG][IMG]

Never understood why the Chevy was the hero of this group when the other three were the top of the line cars with great styling. ///would rather have any one of them over the Chevy. Not being mean, just an opinion that's worth what you paid for it.

For Buick the bodies ran 54,55,56, 57 was a new body, unlike Chev. Same for Olds.

Same reason why the early 30’s fords where popular with performance oriented youth when there were much nicer and faster cars available. 1, people tend to like what they remember they had, 2 cheap 3, plentiful, 4, fairly easy to work on, 5, light weight, 6, able to make go fast at the track ie jr stock, M/P and lower gas class.
Obviously with varying degrees. Pontiac being at one end of the spectrum and Buick being in the end.

My 55 Pontiac I had while I was in the Navy. It had been parked in the high California desert for 25 yrs when I bought it from the guy. We cleaned it up, got it too run, got it registered, painted it with spray cans (Navy blue of course) got a pair of used while whites off my uncle’s 40 Oldsmobile and bought a set of speedway hub caps! I sold it shortly after getting out of the Navy to help pay for school.

At this time my Pontiac collection out numbered my 57 Chevy collection. My 31 Model A roadster can’t be seen but is parked in front of the 55 Pontiac.
