Ok, i know absolulutley jack about transmissions, except how to shift fast, but i have a ford p/u with a c-6 trans and i want to put a differnt auto in it, the motor is a 460 the one im rebuilding now but dont plan to have a new tras for a while but i want to know what my options are if any, I have and idea that an AOD or E4Aod might bolt right to that block.
If you want heavy duty 4 speed I would say E4od but there's a lot you can do with a Aod also.E4od is a heavier heavy duty unit. The Aod is lighter but can be tough also.A E4od is basically a c-6 but longer and heavier.A c-6 tranny is a kick ass tranny itself but it is a 3 speed.Good luck
The only two auto transmissions that "might bolt right to that block" (meaning no adapter) are the C6 & the E4OD. Any other Ford automatic will need an adapter. The E4OD is electronically controlled, so you will need to either run Ford EFI with the factory box, or use an aftermarket controller like the ones from Baumann http://www.becontrols.com/index.htm or TCI. They are fairly expensive, but allow you to adjust converter lockup, shift points, etc. The 4R100 is the updated version of the E4OD & was not made in the BBF trans pattern. The AOD was never used behind the 460. It is possible to use it with an adapter; there are two different "plate" style adapters that I know of, but possibly the best option is to use the JW UltraBell which completely eliminates the AOD's bell. Again, none of the three adapters are cheap; you will generally need a different torque converter; and the AOD will not survive much abuse from a 460 in its stock form. The AOD-E, later known as the 4R70W, is the AOD descendant & is also electronically controlled. There are also adapters, and an UltraBell, to use a C4; there is also a factory bell that will work with a C4, though they can be tough to find. Again, the C4 will need work to survive. It is also possible to adapt a GM transmission to the 460; the 700R4, Powerglide, & TH-400 are the commonly used transmissions. Depending on what you don't like about the C6, it may be cheapest & easiest to correct that, rather than using a different trans. The C6 is often scoffed at as being a power-waster, but rollerizing a C6 eliminates that issue...and can easily be done during a rebuild...and it's already in place, no adapters needed. Auto overdrives are great, but the gas money saved by using one will take a hell of a long time to pay for the adapter & assorted parts.
the 3 speed part is what i dont like i great for towing but im not using for towing heavy trailers or recovery anymore, going for and street/strip shop truck and the C-6 tranny gets the power to the groung fast and hard but i top third at about 70 @ 3.200 rpms the rpms back down to about 2.900 and i picks up speed but very slowly
I'm not sure what exactly you are saying but it sounds as if there might be a converter issue, or the direct clutch packs are failing, or there is a seal problem in the front pump causing insufficient line pressure...
I believe except for AOD transmissions they are mostly all the same (Direct) in top gear. And the speed/rpm would be the same assuming no slippage with either trans. If 351 or 400 M engines come with AOD trans it is also my understanding that they have the same bellhousing as the 460. I had a top loader behind my 460. Loved it.
what i was trying to say is it shifts good and it acellerates good until it basically tops out and the and then it picks up speed takes a long time
Still not sure what you mean about top out then picks up speed? Do you mean it tops out then starts to slip,I'm thinking if it's topped out it's topped out,no more speed. If it's not slipping maybe it would be cheaper to change ring and pinion to get a higher speed. Not really sure what your saying, maybe if you talk us through the gears as your driving the truck and what you don't like about each gear maybe one of us can help you.
