Have you checked the fluid level?

Can act like that with a low level.

the tranny may be dropping out of gear at an idle while hot.

low fluid , worn sealing rings , hard lip seals , pump gears with too much clearance.

it would have to be massively over full to foam the tranny fluid... then it would also puke fluid out the vent onto the ground

sounds like the govenor is hanging up, it is positioned around the tail shaft, and if it is a c4 or c5 you can at about 40 mph simply put it in park for a couple of secondds and it will ratched a bunch and then put back in gear and usually will fre it up but only on a c4 c5. or when it does that pull down to low and then back up to drive before taking off a few times...

Sounds like a pressure problem to me.May be a restricted filter or worse a worn pump.I would pull the pan and change the filter first, especially if it hasnt been changed recently.Does the fluid smell burnt or is it dark?
