So if I'm reading this number right, I8-66II69I, on the top of the transmission, it is a 1940 3 speed for an 85 hp. Am I right? Was told it was a 1939. Doesn't matter just trying to verify.
I thought the prefix '18' was an indication of a 1932 V8 model, but I may be in error about that. In any case, if your trans is a '40 passenger it will be a side shift box.....if '39 or earlier, a floor shifter. A photo would be helpful to those who know more about these than I do.
yes, 18 starts in 32, but if the part wasnt changed it stays 18. so, tranny numbers will be 18, dash, vin number. so go to van pelts sales, and look up the number to get the year. 40 car was side shift, but pickups were top shift until 52 or so, and the closed or open drive can be changed easy enough. if all you want to know is if its a "39" with the good syncros, just look in the top. syncros with a groove in the middle like a sliced bagel are old style, syncros with the groove for the fork all the way to the side are 39 & up
Thanks to those who replied. It is a top loader. It is in the car, don't have a picture. Van Pelts is where I looked also. Was told it is a 39 with the good syncros. Will try to get pictures and dig into Van Pelts again.
Ford serials began with the ID code for the engine families! 18 went on 221s for their whole run, which went into the 1950's overseas. All 239's to 1948 had 99 serials, with year designations added in after WWII...that designation probably went on longer overseas, too, but I've never looked at German, French etc, later serials.
