I'm planning to keep the stock 235 inline 6 in my '53 Bel Air, but I want to reduce weight by replacing my stock cast iron Powerglide automatic with a later aluminum Powerglide. The aluminum version was built for the later series of Chevy Sixes however (194-230-250-292), will the aluminum tranny bolt on my 235?

Won't bolt to the engine without an adapter, and also requires a newer open rear end and driveshaft. If you're going to go to that much trouble, treat yourself to something better than a two speed automatic.

  7. What he said !! Use a 350 Turbo or better yet a 200/700 R4 . With that engine you need all the gears you can get .

Save yourself all the problems and put a 250 or 292 newer 6 and what Bob the Ferret suggested. By doing the engine swap you can have a nice way of putting a manual transmission in there too. Big issue is the open driveline, but fortunately you have leaf springs so it shouldn't be a big issue ala Buick torque tubes.

If you still want to try an adapter try Wilcap or Bendtsens sites below.

    Best o' luck!
