Will a GM 200R mate up with a 3:42 ratio rear end? Some combinations are geared too high to be practical. Is this one of them?

that's a pretty good match, usually. Depends on what else you have, like tire size, engine specs, driving habits, etc.

I had a 2004r in my 32 truck with a 3:50 rear gear, it worked good.

Should be great for a little street racing and also good for the highway since the 200R has overdrive.

The 200R has a low first, so the result of using a 3:42 rear end would be similar to using a TH400 or TH350 with a 3.77 rear end for respective 1st gears (launch or takeoff).

Additionally, the 200R has a .67 overdrive which will lower the rpm for highway use. For instance, at 2000 rpm with a 27 inch tall tire, you will be going 70.1 mph in overdrive with this combination.

Bottom line... you have a good combination here.

    Regards,

I'm running a 200 4R with 2200 stall convertor behind a mild 350 V8. The rearend is from a 1974 Nova SS. It's a 8.5" with a GM True Trac and 3.42 ring and pinion. Cruise all day at 70 mph/ 2000 rpm. Running 225/60/15's. BTW, it's in my '68 Cam. See album. The trans was built by BTO's. A Level II to handle 450 hp/ 450 ft lbs. The 200 4R with my combination does slip into overdrive when putting around city streets at 42-45 mph. With my driving habits a 3.73 might be better for more aggressive driving.
