Andy Southard’s roadster pickup, the house with the woody wagon was John Steinbeck’s.

    Hello,

Nice photo of what our next level of 671 SBC motor would have looked like, if we had been able to continue our drag racing adventures.
    upload_2023-9-20_2-22-5.png
We had set up our last version of the SBC “blower spec” motor to 292 c.i. with a 671 supercharger on a new Isky-Gilmer belt drive and kit, plus 6 Strombergs on top. During late July, we had ordered new wider M&H slicks, Halibrand Wheels all around, a two port Hilborn Injection System, had an appointment for full upholstery and paint. Plus, an appointment for a new C&O Stick Hydro. Everything was going to be in time for the final assembly to run at the September U.S. Nationals in Detroit.

Then it all came to an abrupt end. All ordered parts and services had to be cancelled and returned to the dealers. Now, the recovery started for the next 1.6 years. Theories about “the next build” always brought up a similar modified motor to be used in a Modified Roadster or Competition Coupe. The simple rail builds did not always agree with our choices, although the Competition Coupe would have been a “rail” with a body sitting on top. And, by this time the latest 4 port Hilborn Injection System was available for all supercharged motors.

The small motor factor of any SBC would fit nicely in any modified sedan or roadster. So, those motors were very popular and as soon as we had advertised our own 671 SBC motor, it got sold to the first one with a solid bid. Not to local So Cal racer, although three people wanted the motor for their builds, locally. It was just that the Midwest guy came through with a postal money order similar to cash, to seal the deal.
