Lycoming V8, supercharged, from an 812 Cord. One of 688 blown Cords built, this engine was turned around for rear wheel drive.

That's me at around 13 years old. My first $100 car. Still have it 65 years later. Friends and I chopped the top and welded it up using coat hangers and a torch. A few years ago I had to reweld it to keep it from falling off. Went through several engine changes--4-banger--Flathead--265 Chev. Currently powered by a Turbo Offy. Crazy shit. finnigan1.jpg

Google Jim Lytle "Big Al" the original builder. He was a great guy and a true innovator. He told me when he built the original cars, the engines were so cheap from government surplus, that they rarely worked on them when they broke. They just replaced the complete engine. The original car, Big Al, was in the Garlits Museum. Jim was building a clone when he passed away several years ago.

  27. This photo is in Kansas City, Mo. in about mid- to late '40s, I'm guessing from the Fords, Dodge and six-digit phone numbers. It is now a U-Haul Center with self-storage behind it. It is one diagonal block from the T-Mobile Center and the Power & Light District.

Those engines were basically two Allison V-1710 engines on a single case. They were a 4 row 3420 cubic inch engine. The aircraft salvage I worked for right out of high school had about 1500 single 1710's that we rebuilt to power mud pumps for the oil field. We had about a dozen of the 3420's in one of the hangers. I have only seen one in operation and that was in a pulling tractor in Canada. Here's a link to a very good article on them. https://oldmachinepress.files.wordpress.com/2017/03/allison-v-3420-a-front.jpg
