  12. Bohman & Schwartz built one Phantom Corsair prototype using a Cord 810 front-drive and a Lycoming engine, at a cost of approximately $24,000. Originally intended as a pilot model for a limited production, the Phantom Corsair plans were terminated when Rust was killed in an accident.[1]

    Hello,

The old Holiday Inn corporation had some great ideas in those early days of travel, especially in our neck of the woods. In almost every major city, there were usually two or more Holiday Inn places for weary travelers and vacationers. Today, the Holiday Inn chain has downsized, but still are very active in most cities out West.

A lifetime ago, my wife and I were on our way home from our Northern California travels, it was a very cool, but long road trip. When we hit San Luis Obispo, we knew it was getting close to one of our favorite cities, Santa Barbara, so we plodded on in the heavy rain and thick foggy weather. The freeway was slow going as the wind and rain were sideways and at times moved our El Camino slightly for some steering corrections.

By the time we got to the Northern end of some civilization, we decided that this was too dangerous to continue on into the city for our overnight stay. So, we got off the freeway and luckily found a Holiday Inn on the major, off freeway side street. It was pouring, windy, and still foggy, but the entrance was covered and safe. We got a nice room on the second floor overlooking an empty swimming pool. We ordered in room service. We felt the ease of the road and weather just float away, safe/secure in the room.

The next day was easier to drive on the coastal highway through Santa Barbara all the way home. But, that resting location from the weather was a bright spot on our travels, with plenty to remember the next time we are in the area.

Many years later, we decided to stay in Goleta for a UCSB tour and visiting relatives. We chose what we thought was the the same old Holiday Inn from our 1966-67 travels. It turned out to be now called The Goodland Resort by the Kimpton Corporation. For some reason, we happened to be in the same upstairs room overlooking the pool.

Fate or whatever, it was very weird, but enjoyable. The rooms and the whole complex were remodeled in a beach style 60s scene. There were even little record players in every room with a vast check out LP facility in the main building. It seemed like we just stepped into the new "Twilight Zone." (old driftwood accents, beach scenes, netting, spool tables, etc.)

We got the same feeling in our stay and have continued to stop here every time we are in Santa Barbara or Goleta. It is straight out of our memories of our early beginnings, but those times/memories still keep on showing up all over So Cal.
