History TRADITION VS SNOBERY???

I’ve seen more than a few posts on the HAMB complaining of “homogenized” hot rods. I’ve seen others asking to see “odd rods” and hot rods that were innovative back in the day.

It seems that if a big named guy did it once, it’s considered HAMB friendly and interesting but if a backyarder did it we see posts saying.”Yeah, it was around but not ‘traditional’ and then HAMBERS call for shutting down the post.

As an example, I have seen disc brakes condemned as not HAMB friendly or “not traditional” even though Indiana-built 1949 Crosleys had them and we’ve seen many Crosley gassers. In 1949, Chrysler introduced an optional "disc brake" system on their Imperial, which was retained through the 1953 model. It wasn’t a caliper system, but many Jags had discs and calipers as did Triumphs in the 50’s, and we’ve seen a few Triumph V8’ running the drag strip back in the late 50’s early 60’s.

Then we’ve recently seen that flame throwers weren’t “traditional”and calls for censoring the posts as not HAMB friendly rang out. Critiques cited the dangers of fire and gasoline but seem to disregard the tradition of playing with Nitro Methane and worse chemicals.

So just what makes something traditional or not? Does it have to be homogenized? If I were to show a pic from 1964 of a traction bar that 99.999% didn’t ever use, is it traditional? Or would it be if one of the Ram Chargers used it?

I run drums on every car I build but if someone wants to send me an NOS set of 49 Chrysler disc brakes I'll put them on an early fenderless Ford.

There will ALWAYS be outliers. There will also always be snobs and goobers who'll argue about anything for sport. Sometimes a hot rodder can be any or all of those three and that's okay.

Arguing with a bunch of gear-heads about the definition of "traditional" (or "hotrod" and a half dozen other words) is like rolling around in the mud with a pig.

After a few hours, you start to realise the pig actually likes it

In summary we all are old cantankerous and opinionated even “ in my humble opinion “.
