Common misconception: Morgans have ash-framed bodies but the car chassis frames have been Z-profile cold-rolled steel since 1936 at least.

Wood might be expected to be a good material for a chassis frame, though, because while not as strong as steel it is very rigid for its weight. Steel frames tend to be overkill because a steel frame that is just comfortably strong enough will be far too slender to be practical. However, that's only half of what a frame has to do, and a steel frame performs the bracket-function far better than a wooden one. Wood might be strong enough but it is likely not to be hard enough to prevent bolt holes from wearing bigger. The problem with a wooden frame in the real world is that one needs so much steel reinforcing around bolt holes that one ends up with a steel frame anyway. The more things one has to bolt on, the more that applies.

  5. Closest thing I've seen to these cars are the Millers at the Milwaukee Mile... both are very cool but the Millers aren't quite as old!

  6. Find a late 20's Franklin.
Wood frame, 6 Jug aircooled aircraft motor and rear brakes only.

Also, all the positive camber on the front end was used to balance the cars tendency to oversteer, look at all the Grand Prix cars of that era.

Thanx for dredging up this fab thread, the 5 min film clip is really something, the sound is really amazing, I am blown away at these bad boy hotrods. The frame won't be drying out and is well oiled. I am just totally amazed and am so pleased to be able to get such a great insight to these wonderful race machines. Thanx so much!! ~sololobo~

That thing is wild. Goodness, and positive camber in the front to boot. I bet that steering wheel has some dimples in it from all the white-knuckle driving!

Sorry to resurrect the dead, but this is definitely a bump worth thread :D

Ive been just drooling the last couple days after reading this thread over the thought of attempting to recreate something similar to this beast? I saw this gorgeous incarnation and was in love at first sight, sort like when I met my wife...only stronger! :p

What sort of drive train would something like this make use of? Is there any info out there that pertains to how these guys create their GN? series roadsters? The transmission tunnel in the cabin almost looks like its chain driven somehow (in the first pics the blue roadster next to the JAP is chain driven)

This kind of explains the origins. England version of a T speedster using a cycle car. They (the English) call their gow-jobs specials.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GN_(car)

Oh and the "transmission" was a tin box of sprokets and chains, 2 speed and a dog clutch like some old tractors and dozers. This is something that the GN was famous for there's even a poem from the time.

    "Nash and Godfrey hated cogs,

Built a car with chains and dogs.

And it worked, but would it if

They had built it with a diff?"

As long as they hold hands there aren't any problems.:p

I'd love to build something like this. Back to the basics hotrodding. Pre-war tech.

I love the names they gave to these GN specials. Names like "spider", "Mowgli", and my favorite "Bloody Mary"
