Bob, thanks for your effort here on the other threads. You won't make me mad if you start recycleing pics of this outrageous contraption! Whatever it takes to keep this thing alive.

What do you mean "stood the test of time" ? It is a fairly recent construction. I spoke with the owner and builder Richard Scaldwell at Prescott in 2008 and he told me when he acquired the engine he wasn't certain whether he would build a bike with it or a car. As much as I like bikes I think he made the best choice and to me it is one of the coolest things on wheels.

Here is the other J.A.P. Aero engine. There were 2 built to power baloons. 5100cc.I believe the image originates with the gentleman who is called "Gas Baloon".

Wow! I didn't realize it was THAT rare an engine. Should have guessed I suppose. I would love to know what kind of internal tweaks Richard had to do to make it into such a screamer. I see the other engine has the period holes ( "porting") on the lower part of the cylinders. I think this was in vogue for only a short time . I have seen Dale Walksler's factory Reading Standard race bike on the stand belching fire from a similar setup, great for paying customers at a board track race.

I don't know guys. I just took out some 100 year old wall studs while remodeling my parents house. I think it would take a torch to cut one of them. Not that I would build a chassis out of them but I can see where an original one from back in the day would probably be pretty strong.

So because this isn't an American car, this thread would be a casualty? Not sure that's the best approach...just my 2 cents.

This is as badass and as traditional as ANY prewar American rod.

  25. This sure isnt going to make it on the HAMB after Sept 1st...

Rex, most of us don't care what country it came from. The point is that the HAMB is for American cars only, and when Ryan starts cleaning house in September threads like this will be closed and deleted.

I suspect this is an over-reacton. Ryan clearly indicated that he would make exceptions at his discretion based on coolness factor. This is pretty cool in anyone's book.

I agree completely with the coolness factor of this thing...It reminds me a lot of the film they did on Top Gear UK about the Brutus that some crazy German built using an old german WWII fighter plane engine and put it in an open top car like that vs. one some British guy built using a WWII Spitfire engine in an open top car. I cant remember what cars they used as platforms but both were cool as shit...oil spraying everywhere, fire shooting out of the exhaust and a sound like nothing else I have ever heard before...all on skinny tires with shitty brakes bombing (get it? bombing?) around the test track at break-neck speeds. Pure badassedness if you ask me....
