I like them all! Each a different vision of the builders ideas.
I like all built cars, don't care if customs, rods, muscle cars etc. I even love rat rods. I like the idea of rat rods for 2 reasons, 1 rat rods have saved a few bodies from the junk heap, by keeping them around maybe the next generation will take them and build them up to the next level, 2 I have seen some that the intricate details are amazing, the little things are what I notice, some of the bracketry etc. Sure there are some that are trash but like any car group there are always some.

Love customs, the body work, the body lines, etc. I don't always like the looks but admire the craftsmanship.

Old hot rods, love them all, watching them evolve thru the decades. Flat heads, old olds motors etc. Some of the "non" car craft, hot rod mag hot rods I've seen from the old days where built for speed not looks as many where built by part time working school kids who had to decide between looks or speed.

Like today many car mags represent a small portion of hot rods out there, kinda like playboy, we all wish our women looked like that but it's not the normal average representation of the female, nor the average hot rod.

The rules and guidelines here are respected. Rat anything is taboo around here and I support that 100% so why talk about it...Traditional and Inspired Hotrod/Custom rolls. This thread is again about the lesser thans, just a little differents, one offs, and thats it in a nutshell. Glad your enjoying the content.

  19. Whippet.jpg My car still getting cleaned up. Most everything is 1959 and older. NOS Lyons caps on 1940 Ford rims, 1940 stock Ford front end with 2" drop, 1939-41 Lincoln 12" self energizing brakes, 1952 Desoto /Hemi with 1955 Imperial Generator and 1955 Desoto 4 bbl with 1956 Caddy carb, 1951 Almquist water alcohol injection, gauge cluster is a 1956 Olds. Being a Willys Overland Whippet makes it a very oddball Hotrod. Never seen another Hotrodded. Most likely because of all the wood. I think these had more wood in them than any Chevy, Nash, Durant, etc etc!! Anyway, its cleaned up a lot since first getting on the road.

  21. The only thing that is not 1959 and older is I am using a stock 1955 power steering pump on the back of the stock Imperial generator and I put a very small 1989 Mercedes steering gear box in it. The steering wheel had to be small and the pump helps just enough. I also installed a T-5 5 speed in it and it loves 70 mph.!!! And the last thing is I made a bell crank out of some old 1920s clutch and brake pedals and have a power brake booster under the cowl facing the passenger side. I drove 9 ours in this car and its the most comfortable car you could ever drive in. It's defnately a Hotrod and loud but I'd drive it across the country without hesitation. Even with the straight axle and bias plys. 20160328_183047.jpg

  23. Here's a cool angle. I'm so glad I got these exhaust pipes finally off and put on the hand made more traditional pipes. Talk about a wedge shape. The cowl has a ton of room for your legs. I can hardly reach the clutch and gas with the seat back. This was also before I installed the 12" 1939-1941 Lincoln brakes. I bought the stock 1940 front end with disc brakes on it. I also couldn't wait to get rid of those eye sores. Funny thing was, my drums stop 100% better than the disc brakes. Like I said, some of the stuff I had on it I couldn't wait to get off and put the more traditional stuff on. The NOS 16" Lyons caps also clean it up a lot. 20150601_122512.jpg 20160320_114111.jpg 20160319_190950.jpg

Un newing is great...I like yourself find drum brakes and bias plys to work just fine. As the old saying goes with a Hotrod they're never done.
The front drum setup really looks great and what does Almquist water alcohol injection do? Rabid the grille is Chevy?

I agree about straight axles and bias-ply tires. I just got told on another thread here about the "superiority" of independent suspension and radials. A street rodder running amuck here. That Whippet is really cool even with a few hidden modern things. It's spirit prevails.

  27. I am the resident goofball so what I am about to say will not make much sense to anyone who doesn't speak and think goofball, so that is my disclaimer.

The only time that radials become superior is when the suspension is tuned for radials. I could go into detail here but I won't because it has little bearing on this thread but let us leave it at this, ask any drag racer that has switched from bias ply slicks to radial slicks. ;)

I think that both types of tires have their place. I couldn't give a damn about looks, that is for spectators, I drive a car and all I see is the hood. LOL I like the feel of a bias ply as much as I like the feel of an obsolete suspension. It is what I grew up with and just feels right to me.

Note I just perused this thread for I am not sure how many times, there are some real smooth old heaps here and some of them built by you fellas, makes me all giggly just to know that some of you fellas have still got it going on.

Chuck very well thought out and executed unique Hotrod.

You should add your link to your build thread in your post so others can find it. I just read it this morning. It all helps connect the dots.
