I am looking for some suggestions on Bias Ply tire size for a westergard style custom. I am using newer style 15"x5" wide cragar wheels (see pics) with 49-50 Pontiac caps and bullets. Of course I want wide whets was hoping to go with some the same relative size as a 600-16. Anyone have some suggestions? ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1389040640.098102.jpg

This of course is the look I'm after! ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1389040740.133231.jpg

And one more pic of my 36 to give an idea of where I'm at. ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1389040874.967112.jpg

Personally I'd be using 16" from your basic description but to answer your Q, 600/16 are approximately 28" overall diameter whilst 670/15 that would match your rims are usually about 28.75" overall diameter dependant on brand, I'm talking Firestones. Not enough difference to be an issue, go a 670/15 and choose your white wall really based on you build era slot and your done, unless ou sell you rims and buy some 16"s....

Saying that, with your 5" rim a 710/15 might sit better on the rim as they are spec'd for a 5"-5.5" vs. 4.5"-5" for the 670/15, height is 28.88 so not worth worrying about but would look happier on the wider rim in my opinion.

    Cheers

    6.70 15 with at least a 3.25" whitewall.
Firestone Deluxe Champions always look good.

A friend of mine just got a set of 6.70 15's for his '50 Ford and they seem like the ideal size for a 15" tire on a full fendered car.

Neat looking hubcaps. Also good call on a 5" wide rim, I see alot of customs that get ruined trying to run too wide of a rim and tire. I've also seen guys run those wheels without caps, not very attractive in my opinion.

  6. Personally,I can't imagine pie crust on a custom.

    This sounds about right. HRP

Thanks guys. I had definetly decided to go with Coker as The alliance discount is really good with them. I would have gone with 16" wheels (and this may sound horrible) but I really dig these hubcaps and wanted to use them, so it kind of dictates my wheel size. I dont see them used alot on customs so That was what I was shooting for.

Looks like I'll be going with either a 6.70 or a 7.10 with as big a whitewall as I can. Thank you all so much for the input. I'll post some pics when I get them mounted.

How are you going to mount those Pontiac caps on smooth center rims, since they mount with three hubcap clips in the center? Are you going to bond them to a smaller rim mount trim ring?

I was either thinking of welding on another outer ring OR I also had thought of making a center mounting bolt that would in effect allow them to be held in place by a nut and then the bullet would screw onto the same bolt. Similar to how an air cleaner mounts to a carb.

And those Deluxe Champion tires look pretty attractive. When the term piecrust gets thrown around my brain goes to what HRP posted too.
