Time or money?

[FONT=&quot]When I was young I had plenty of time to build a hot rod but not much money. Id have to scrounge around for parts, trade and barter but I was still able to build some pretty nice cars. As I got older my income increased and so did my responsibilities. I could afford to build a hot rod but it was really difficult to find the time to do it. Now Im retired and while Im not going broke I still need to watch the nickel s and dimes and I again have plenty of time. I now really enjoy going to the shop and figuring out how to make something from nothing. I get a great feeling of accomplishment when I can do something for little money that works and looks just as good as the high priced stuff. Now I know it would be nice to have both a pile of money and all of the free time in the world but if you had to choose one what would it be?

I'd always choose time, then you have some to look for parts.

Well....... money would be good but I wouldn't know how to build with new parts.

It's funny how years ago I was working 60 to 70 hours a week and my theory was that I'd work at my job which I knew how to do, and I'd make money to be able to pay someone to do stuff for me that they knew how to do, and I didn't have the time to do. Now I'm retired and have the time to do all the stuff I didn't have time for before, but the one thing that always remained constant was that I built all my cars myself, that was the one thing I just could not bring myself to have done for me, oh sure I had friends that helped but I never gave a car to someone and said " call me when it's done " I guess it's part of the Hot Rod mentality that we all have, I don't mind saying so and so put a new roof on my house, but when it comes to my cars, well, " I built it myself " just kind of agrees with me. It seems that most of us here are like that. So I guess if I had to choose one over the other I'd choose time, there will always be money somewhere, time is something to be cherished.

i'm in the middle now. not enough time, more money than i've ever had but still not enough to do half of what i want to do.right now i wish i had more time.

My problem, when I have the time to look for parts - then I don't have the money to buy the parts I've taken the time to find. When I have the money, I can't remember where I found the parts in the first place. Ain't gettin' old fun.

Heard that old saying "Never the twain shall meet"...??? Means time and money are mutually exclusive...you can have one or the other, but not both in sufficient quantities to do any good.

Gotta disagree with 40StudeDude. They're not mutually exclusive, they're substitutes for one another. You either do the work yourself or you pay somebody else to do it, otherwise stay on the sofa and nothing gets done.

Interesting dilemma, and one that I have also pondered. When I was young I knew that I wanted to retire early so that I didn't end up like my Dad who was shot long before he was retired. I planned to retire before 60, and I did. Money is not and issue since I did plan well for my retirement...now I have time and money but find that I am running out of room and it seems that every day I develop a new ailment that slows me down.

Years ago my sister dated a guy who was independently wealthy. I mean that this guy was so loaded that he laughed about how many cars he went through in a year. He would drive by the Mercedes dealership and if there was a new model out he would stop and buy it. I saw how he was never happy with what he had even though he could have almost anything. Being a poor young slob and not being able to afford much more than a semi-dependable DD I once told him, "Peter, I don't know what's worse, you who can afford anything and not have anything that you are happy with or me who can afford almost nothing but have a definite goal in mind for when I can afford it". He laughed and said that he would change places with me if he thought it would make us both happy. My sister never would marry him...I guess that's why they lasted so long together.

Enjoy what you have while you have it, for soon it will be gone...if you have time then all things are possible.

I wish I did. I spend more time working than I want, and would rather spend that time in the shop. But time spent working means money coming in. Having more time would solve both problems.

5 years, if you also have a full time job and family "duties", $6000.00 or the equivilant in "gifts from friends" plus the price of the original car.
That's for a "driver".

Definitely time. My clock stopped in June 2010 but the doc got it started back again. The bill was almost $250K and well worth it. I just spent most of this past week with my first grandchild.

Time. You only get so much, then it's gone forever, and you are, too.
Money comes and goes, and there are no limits on how much you can have, but if you don't use it right, it gets gone quick.

I'll take time anytime. There are still lots of things you can do for free!

Time. I'd take time. When I first did my T, I didn't have a lot of money and still don't, but I scrounged and shopped for parts, etc. What kicked my ass was not having the time to do all the things I had in my head. Sometimes, I worked on my car till the wee hours of the early morning and hated that I had to stop and go to work or run some damned errand.

If you're a penny pincher and use your resources, you'll find a way to get the parts you need. But in the world of the average stiff, you'll always wish you had just a few more hours or days to yourself and your project.

Time!! your could take buckets of money under with you when your time is up. But all things aside I am only 33 trying to look at the big picture. What ever that is? I just went in for a double hernia operation a week ago. Even with insurance I had to sign up for $7250 worth of debt. WTF. makes me think man I better start saving for my future! But how long might that be? I say work as hard as you can with out making your self sick, put a little away for a rainy day. treat your family right and what ever else is left have FUN. Rest asured unless you are a lazy welfare case you can always make money if you need it. Just dont spend beyond your means. No Steak on a hamburger budget
