I was happy to actually see a major sporting event take time out of an event today to remember our vets, they stopped the race, brought all the cars to a stop on pit road, shut them off and observed a minute of silence at 3:00 pm for our vets. As much stuff as Nascrap pulls, they actually did something right today. We need more people to take the time to do this. Thumbs up to them today at least. And thank you to all the vets on here from me:). also can someone fix the headers misspelling please?

  4. One of the coolest things I've seen in racing in a long, long time. Kudos to NASCAR for the effort.

If they were serious about honoring the Vets they would not hold a race on Memorial day. Same shit happens here for ANZAC Day only its football. Absolute diss respect holding money making sporting events on a day like Memorial/ANZAC Day.
Try to wrap it up in whatever BS patriotic fervor you want, simple fact is the day is about they who fought and they who died.
Don't take anything away from that, they are effectively belittling the sacrifice of so many.

They did the right thing. Now if we could just convince the people in the stands to do the same.

  8. It was a neat thing to be a part of. They said nothing over the radios but cautions out, then told us their intentions. It was cool stopping the race for that, I think.

At Lions Drag Strip, when it was managed by Pappy Hart, he would play a record before the eliminations of the National Anthem. If anyone was not standing, he would point them out and wait until that person stood. If anyone was wearing a cap, he would point them out until they removed it. If they did nothing, they were escorted out of the drag strip.
Today during the playing of the Anthem, the television cameras pan the crowds as many of them chatter, giggle while wearing their caps. Some even like talking on their cell phones during the Anthem...
I honestly just look away at that point...It not only shows a lack of respect for one's Country but also shows the lack of understanding and self-respect. They just don't understand how wonderful it feels to "take pride" instead of "take for granted"...

Mazooma, that is cool, so many times I have wanted to confront someone over not doing the right thing for the anthem. I wish they still did things like Pappy.

My heroes in life are those who have served, fought, and died in defense of my country and in defense of our friends. Anything to bring more attention to these heroes that may otherwise be overlooked is fine by me. The sacrifices made by the men and women over the last 200 plus years cannot and should not go unnoticed. And in my world, this includes ALL vets. Even the confederates.

Veterans deserve our utmost respect and thanks for their sacrifices. It's not an easy life even when there's no war going on or if you don't have a combat M.O.S.. And there still is a war going on. Our men and women (and those of our allies) are still sacrificing, fighting and dying a long ways away from home. A lot of people seem to forget.

If you've ever served, please accept my gratitude and heartfelt thanks. Although, thanks can never be enough.

Yeah it was cool to throw a yellow and honor our veterans, and yeah I've more than once hollered at some stupid asshole in the infield at Atlanta Motor Speedway who didn't stop, stand and remove hat during the playing of the national anthem.
But I'm spring loaded to the pissed off position at whoever the fucking idiot is who allowed a Toyota as the pace car today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. The race was not planned for Memorial day and it was a good thing that they took the time to honor the lost comrades. It is not a perfect world and all did not show respect, but those of us who understand will stand with honor and a tear in our eye, because we know. I went to a parade today and i stood on the side as older veterans passed in vehicles and I caught the eye of one and offered my best salute and as we locked eyes we both knew.
God bless our veterans and today bless those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

  17. I've been a NASCAR Fan since 1994 and this is one of the best things I've seen out of them in a long while...Hats off to NASCAR, it was a very honorable gesture. I stood up myself and was proud to do so.

Seems to me they fought for our right to do whatever we want on any day of the year . There is no one I respect more than veterans ,and Memorial day is our most important holiday in my opinion , but I don't believe they are disrespected by the race being held today . They were ,however disrespected by the assholes running their mouths .

I am one of those Veterans that fought for the freedom do do whatever you wish to whenever you want.
Having said that they close the western world down for a day every year for a frigging religious holiday. That I cant respect.
But they will play games and hold races on the one day that seriously made a difference in EVERYONES life, not just those who believe in christianity.
Then they think stopping a money making venture for a minute is a great honor?
No, having a day of Memorial includes things like what Povertyflats did.

A lot of emotion for me on this day. I've posted it before, no need to repeat. I'll just say to those who don't show respect."where do you think we would be and who would be in charge of your life if there were a different flag flying over Washington?" I can guarentee you there would be no hot rods and a lot of other things we take for granted.

Doc, give it up!!!! It was a gesture meant as respect for the vets. NASCAR wasn't the only sporting event today. If the fans wouldn't buy tickets on Memorial Day, a sporting event would not be held. At least this provides an opportunity to draw attention to the sacrifices of the vets. Had NASCAR not been running today and thrown the yellow, millions may not have taken even a casual moment to give thought. IMHO this event provided a platform to show homage.

I hope you can see the good and will chose to focus on the positive, not the negative.

  22. There were a handful of asshole rednecks whooping and screaming before the period of silence was overwith. Some people are complete assholes, no matter where they rear their ugly heads. People yakking it up during the National Anthem, or the prayer, really piss me off, too.

NASCAR races are always on Sunday. Unless they get rained out, then it's Monday. It wasn't scheduled on Memorial Day on purpose.

The event was started as an attempt by NASCAR to stage a Memorial Day weekend event that would rival the open-wheel Indianapolis 500 in fan interest and it has succeeded, gaining larger TV ratings than the Indianapolis race from 2002-2004. It was not until 1974, however, that both races competed head-to-head on the same day[1]. Prior to 1974, the two races were held on different days of the week, and on a few occasions, some drivers drove in both; this continued even after the 600 was moved to the same day, albeit to a smaller degree. In fact, the first World 600 was not held on the Memorial Day weekend; it was held on June 16th due to snowstorms that delayed the completion of Charlotte Motor Speedway. The 2009 race, due to the fact that the race was postponed from its original May 24th date, was the first race to have run on Memorial Day itself.

Hey Doc, I don't necessarily disagree with you, but it's a holiday here, so if there's something going on, then I say "very cool" that they stopped their event to recognize what the day was really about.

They are exercising their right to choose, that right guaranteed by those who have given service to our country. Whether I think they are right or wrong is besides the point, it's not my place to tell them how to think.

...and I have told more than one person, when attending an event where the National Anthem is played, "Take off your hat and show some respect". And ya know, only one person has ever argued with me, but when he got up off the ground he took his hat off...:D

Doc,after I read this I was sort of offended. But,then it explained many of the bad feeling you seem to hold. The race was rained out yesterday. The race was not going to be run on Memorial Day.I think the NASCAR people handled this well.Although you'll always have the idiots that will not show repect,99.9 % will.I would never complain about what you do in your country, but I would hope you will not complain what WE do in ours.Thank you Veterans for keeping us free.

It's OK--it was a rain delay from the prior day. Our president apparently was playing golf. hope he took the same time-out.

Greatest thing I've ever seen done during a Nascar race. Our Vets and troops deserve it. To bad it got rained out yesterday.

Once upon a time in the USA Memorial Day was established as May 30th by congress. It made no difference what day of the week May 30th fell on it was all about honoring our
military members who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. It was not about getting a three day weekend. That came along later. Veterans Day was moved from it's traditional day also to make yet another 3 day weekend although most people other than gov. and banks rarely get it off.

The Indy 500 was run for decades on Memorial Day as a memorial to our fallen heros and thusly rarely fell on the same day as the 600. I'm glad to see a resurgence in appreciation for what our military does that allows us to do what we do every day.

There is a movement to restore both of these holidays to their traditional dates. I back that and hope that it picks up steam. The people that wear their hats and talk during the anthem will fight it though. I pray there is more of us than them in the end.

    Tom
