Hey Ghostrdr, didn't Cadillac change the hp rating from the flywheel to the rearwheels about that time and that's why the hp rating dropped so drastically? (along with the other stuff you mentioned)
I have a 54' Plymouth and have a 500 Cad mill w/ BOP TH400 for it. The guys over at: http://www.cadillacpower.com/forum/index.php are a great help for these motors. As usual, you folks are a wealth of information. Actually, for the first time since we've bought this car, I'm excited about it and the 472. I believe it will be a unique perspective on the coupe and meet my power requirements without busting my budget at the same time. I'm truly not going to put a SBC or SBF in it and I'd like it to be unusual...and am building it for that goal also. Without going to tons of effort, does anyone have measurements of the engine? Most importantly would be the left to right measurement. I've got plenty of north south room, but not a lot east west, especially in the nose portion of the car.

my dad is a caddy nut, grew up with them, and have a '76 500 in my '60 f-100. my engine is real snappy, added a rattle can detail job, chrome kit, edelbrock intake/carb with stock exhaust manifolds. a 472 has a bit more snap than a 500 (.250 shorter stroke) and by 72-73 were getting pretty good gas mileage. the a.i.r. passages in the front of the heads can be pulled and small over the counter steel inserted. odds are you'll need to locate an eldorado oil pan/pickup/dipstick ('68-'78 will interchange). a BOP th400 will work and have a better tranny mount than the caddy (leaned this one thee hard way. if you need any more info, shoot me a pm, wont waste space here. todd

hello everyone im new here. i read this and it got my attention (Crank: Most 500 cranks have a casting # ending in 93 or 94, next to the 4th main journal. Most 472 cranks have a casting # ending in 24, found on the 3rd counterweight. The 425 crank is the same stroke as the 472 crank, and is physically interchangeable, but cannot be balanced effectively due to the drastic weight difference caused by the bore size. ) i was thinking about putting a 472 crank into a 368 because i know the old 472 crank is stronger but has the same stroke. would it not be possible? im not trying to make the 368 drag race id get a 500 for that. but some decent numbers out of it would be nice, like maybe almost 400 lb ft. ive heard the the 368 crank might not be up to a lead foot and a decent power boost. any thoughts

Balls out,damn near indestructible,torque monster..My '72 Coupe has the 472 and isn't too much of a gas guzzeler..And performance mods galore for these..But if you get a 472 from the first 2 or 3 years they were put in Caddy's,those have the highest stock horsepower.. BTW, the rockers are the weak point on these engines, but MTS and others offer some fairly inexpensive shaft rockers that fix the problem. Also, if you want an HEI, you can grab one from a later 368 Cad (easier to find in the junkyard).
One of my friends yanked a 500 out of a rotten Eldorado and put it in his '81 Chevy C-10 pickup, transforming it into the best tow vehicle ever! Even with 2.73 gears, it laughed at hills while hauling his stock car and trailer.
There's plenty of aftermarket parts out there to make most BBC engines envious. Even the led ass 74 472 has more torque than most big block chevies, From what I understand they only lost a real 15 per cent of torque and hp. That still gives them alot to work with. They're lighter and becoming more popular for the hotrod crowd.
I put a 472 in a 37 Fiat Topolino. Made a sheetmetal tunnelram, used two Edelbrocks, had Lunati special grind a hydraulic cam (made part number 30,000), used 69 model 10 1/2 -1 compression pistons, and made a low RPM screamer. A homemade roller rocker set up can be made. A smallblock Chevy is cheaper and easier and prettier but the Caddy is a heck of a engine.
There's a Ford 385 type (429, 460) hi-rise (and medium also) intake the Cad guys are using, it requires a pair of mfd. plates from one of the Cad speed sources...Imagine, a Ford intake on a Cad. Friend of mine in San Jose ran two 500 cu.in. Cads in a LSR 'liner, topped 300 mph. His tow truck was a '65 Ford 'Camper Special', 500" Cad adapted to the Ford pickup granny 4-speed, and a highway gear. HE COULD CRUISE AT 100 mph, THE HEAVY 2-WHEEL TRAILER BEHIND, AND THE 4,000 LB. 'LINER ON IT! He welded the Ford upper valve covers onto the Cad ones, and when he took it to have it smogged, the smog guy said, "How come this Ford has a Delco distributor?" Butch said, "I dunno..." The smog cert read, 'Passed'.
put a stock 73 472 in the back of a yugo with a 9'' and frame sticking out the back and it went 8.00 flat in the 1/8. its name was yugozilla
Considering its displacement the 472/500 is a light engine. But mostly as a result of that, the engine is not as rugged as a big block Ford or Chevy. The crank has big journals, but is iron. The rods are iron. The main caps tend to walk with anything more than a modest increase in RPMs. The heads were designed for great low RPM power, not big horsepower. A variety of upgrade and performance improvement parts are available for the engine, but those can only do so much. While the engine has decent power and good durability if not pushed too hard, if I was looking for big power numbers with good reliability I would start with tougher components. So like most things, depending on your requirements, the engine is either a good option or not.

------------------ I have no idea what's involved in putting one a '40 Plymouth, but if you can fit a 455 Buick in there, than the Caddy should go in to the same hole just about as well. If you can get a 472 in decent running condition for 500 bucks I'd grab it. Even in bone stock form, the copious torque produced by the 472 will be fairly outrageous in a '40 Plymouth! If you're bucks down right now, I'd probably just leave it stock for now and just put it in as in and drive it. Later on if you "feel the need for speed" as they say, because the early '70's-vintage 472 Caddies used such an extremely conservative 'tune' in stock form, compared to a lot of other engines, they respond inordinately well to a cam upgrade, headwork, more compression and more aggressive ignition timing. Edelbrock makes a "Performer" aluminum intake for it, and I've heard of guys, with a bit of machine work (not sure what is involved here) adapting 429-460 Ford intakes to fit the 472 Cadillac block and heads too, so that opens up a whole bunch of intake and carb possibilities. Lots of opinions, some good and bad information... I had a junkyard 500 in my '60 F-100, which was replaced this summer with a freshened up '70 472. I love the torque, and with some work on the heads mine pulls really hard to 5,500 rpm. Rocker arms and valve springs are a must, regardless of your intentions. Anyone will tell you that. I've had a board out 472 Caddy in my 60 Chevrolet Sedan Delivery for over 20 years and couldn't be happier with it. I'm also building a steel 40 Fiat Topolino Coupe with a 500 Cadillac in it. If you want to keep cost down and get the most bang for your buck, alumn. intake and a performance oil pump will do the trick.. I can send you photos of both cars engines if you like. I post here but still can't figure out how.
