  1. No 4 link
    No stutter box
    Wireless Tach
    No breakout ‘puter
    No clutchless transmission
    No bottle, turbo or supercharger
    No shift light
(How does the poor guy know when to shift ? LOL)

    Enjoy !

Put hard sidewall slicks on them and no track prep. Then you will see how it was. :D

Our B/Gas 283 SBC with Strombergs, then 4 months later, 671 supercharged 292 SBC rebuild for C/Gas Class at Lion’s Dragstrip in 1960. (1940 Willys Coupe)

    Hello,

Before anyone gets the idea that Gas Coupe and Sedan racing began with 55 Chevy sedans and straight axles, take a look at the old 50s-60s films that we took during our time at Lion’s Dragstrip and other places in So Cal. (You Tube
J Naki) Those up in the air sedans came in the mid to late 60s and into the 70s. Beyond the scope of the HAMB traditional classes.

We had shiny, big, Sun Tachometers on the dash or on the steering wheel column. We learned to tune our motors by sight and sound. Then we learned to shift at the peak moment of the high revving motors we built. The tach was there and there were shift points taped on to the face, but that went out of the window when a tight race was staging at the start line and tons of your friends in the stands. As soon as the green light came on, it was go…

Speed Engineering’s Tom McEwen, Bixby Knolls, 1955-57 stock car class and then with a McCulloch Centrifugal Supercharger, into the Gas Coupe and Sedan Class.

This was real grass roots drag racing as learning by doing without the help of computers or other devices. It was turn on the motor, stage and shift when it was necessary by ear. There were some people that were so regular in their shift points during every single race that we saw. They were like machines. Doug Cook, K.S. Pittman and of course, Long Beach Speed Engineering’s, Junior Thompson in his 1958 U.S. Nationals, winning Little Eliminator 1941 Studebaker Sedan.
listen to the revs and shift points.

The recorded sound could be edited into Doug Cook’s 37 Chevy Coupe or K.S. Pittman’s 41 Willys Coupe as their shift points were right on the money on almost every run/race. Learning to shift when it was time, was the key to winning races from stock car racing to Gas Coupes and Sedans.

  11. IMO, SEGA does an excellent job
    of re-creating 1967 NHRA gasser
racing. The cars and action is very
similar to what I remember at the time.

As with any venture, some will enjoy,
    others may be disappointed.

  12. That's the Type of Racing I used to do only I ran Modify Production & it
brought back Memories not like the shit on Street Outlaws
The Only thing they due is Steer the car!

They used to call my Car the Screaming Big Block I used
Come out of the Hole at 8500 & Shift at 8500.
engine built by My Friend may (he rest in peace) Jack Merkel

    Just my 3.5 cents

  13. I be lovin’ some MP,
    my favorite class w/stock
    classes just behind it !

MP was about the hottest class I
could associate with as cars that
could be street driven. Took a lot of
engine building skills to win MP. Way more than turning up the boost or bigger bottle !

Need some details on your car ???

edit: Street Outlaws = Street Clowns

Don't forget the factory frame rule too! Custom built frames weren't allowed until near the end of Gas Class rules.

What happend to Donavan and white trash? Miss that car at the SEGA for last couple years, seemed like 5 or 6 years ago (maybe more, time flys) it was the car that pushed everyone harder and harder as it was the clear one to beat.

Not complaining, I'll still try to hit at least 4 SEGA RACES a year as I have since I stumbled across them years ago. Just curious.

  25. Thank you. Real gas class cars and not street beasts. The sky high gassers happened after us and didn't last very long.

You just moved to the top of the list my friend.

  26. Good ? Looks like Quain Stott sold his car too. Could it be everyone named Stott is out of competition to keep competitors’ complaining down ?

  27. Thanks, Merc !

    I might be surprised to hear a 427 3400# Chevelle was a C/MP. AFAIK, a ‘63 Impala Z11 ran A/MP.

Typical C/MP in late ‘60’s, around here was. 311 55 Chevrolet.

You weren’t claiming that 427 to be a 396 or worse, 366. Were you ?
    Hahaha

  28. Gasser classes I’m used to determined by dividing CI into weight. All N/A.

How were blowers, super chargers, turbos factored in ?
