In his day Harry Miller was probably the best race car fabricator in the U.S.
I believe that if he was still alive he would come to your shop to see how it should
    be done. Really great work.

  2. Yup, and this is what the HAMB needs! And if you thing your work is "not worthy", BS! Decent work documented right helps all of us. Brians tig welds are pure sex, DO NOT let that dissuade you from posting your stuff. this board is a give and take

i agree with Tman. BASS's threads are exactly what the HAMB needs and definitely what knuckleheads like myself need. he painstakingly shows all of us everything. no way does he need to do that. but he does anyway. like i said he makes guys like me realize where the bar is at and just how much attention can be paid to the details. his builds have inspired me more than all the books and magazines combined ever have. and if i didnt want to learn from guys like that i wouldnt be here. keep going and keep showing.

  4. yup, what they said. this is the best type of inspiration you can get. ive done more work on my pos since i joined up, than i had for a long time. thanks mr bass. and thanks for the many rides in your coupe. even if its the same roads when i do. i just lean back, turn up the volume and away we go! yee harrrrrr (mad fabricators dvd)

    hey bass,

i keep coming up here looking for some new pics, and all i find is a bunch of guys giving you guff from a supposed engineering standpoint. if they are engineers, and i am doubting it from some of the posts, i am sorry to you for them. and we are not all tools. as far as i can see you are correct, and your discussion on compromise is spot on. and any engineer should know that, as almost everything is a compromise in engineering. or as we like to say, and optimization problem. beautifully written.

and to everyone else, i did post my build pics. i was inspired by bass to do so, even though my welds are utter crap next to his. dont worry, the important ones were done by a pro, meaning my dad. oddly no one has come to rip me a new one, and i was almost spoiling for a fight. i guess i have to make prettier stuff and grow a kick ass beard. well, i had one, and a bunch of long hair but it went away for a job i didnt get.

yes i am an unemployed engineer who spends his days looking for a gig and building my car for those keeping score. so i do have time to read posts. but i digress.

one thing missing from your critics is something that actually means anything. like math. if these guys have a serious problem, why dont they produce something real rather than their vaunted opinions? how about a fatigue failure analysis? dynamic stability analysis? cad models, fea, tangent speed, understeer budget, or any of that stuff that, like, matters to us nerdy engineer types. dont worry. there are people here who can understand it. the same as we can understand that your criticisms lack citations, history, and calculation.

to our friend opining on the front axle/ split wishbone question. you may notice that the original build thread points out that the hairpins have a ball end. ball ends do not translate moments, only lateral forces. this is why the front end can move the way it obviously does. and the point that an i beam front axle would give more complience is crazy, since the tube axles are designed to give just as much rigidity as the i beams, but at a lower weight, reducing unsprung weight, and improving the ride. the axle, hairpins, and frame, if correctly designed, should be considered rigid bodies for dynamic analysis. if they flexed enough to give complience in order to aid suspension travel, they would certainly break. and the car would not be able to handle the torque of the motor. and it would screw up suspension angles. and that is all a bad practice.

bass i, along with the rest of the mortal masses eagerly await new pics. your work is awesome. thanks for sharing, and being a good sport with "those guys."

    crazed.

Well said crazed. Too many with opinions who probably don't have or haven't built cars. Smoke blowers.

Mr. Bass.....A few times a week I take the hair raising ride into Dallas ( mad fabricators )with you just to get the old heart rate going. Now that I know what kind of thought and talent goes into your builds, I hope I get to take a ride in this one...even if it is on video.
My opinion doesn't really count but I am so impressed with all that I have seen in the post.
    MORE !!!!

You must be very proud of the chance to go the distance with the chassis, and like a lot of H.A.M.B.er's I want to thank you for the time you took to chronicle the whole thing.points to Mr Wade for giveing you this opportunity to " run loose", again thanks to both of you! Eddie

Been a few days since I indulged myself by ogling Brian's craftsmanship in this thread... the fact that folks can create controversy from this thread shook my faith in humanity (a little bit).

Again, amazing work, Brian - can't wait to see it in person.

Brian, Incredible work to say the least. Your welding is absolutely incredible! I have an Esab heliarc 250 and use a water cooled torch. I'm self taught and have learned by trial and error over the years. I have gotten real good at it, but would liek to get to the next level. What is your techniquie for welding welding mild steal? I find my biggest issue is being able to see well enough. I recently started wearing reading glasses under my helmet! Any advide would be welcome. Keep up the awesome work, Mike
