Frank Morawski has owned the superbell coupe since he bought it from Jim Ewing when Jim sold Superbell. As stated,it used to run moon discs which Frank Still has. The coupe is painted Cal-Trans orange because Jim got the paint for free, which was typical Jim. The coupe will be in pomona in January for the Roadster show as part of the 75 significant 1934 Fords. Frank also has some other noteworthy cars which I,m sure he,ll pipe up and tell you about. As for Cyclone Kevin,s mention of George Wilson.it is about time he get,s recognised for all the stuff he has done. For example,he helped Al Teague build his streamliner, worked on Gene Oley,s Roadster and a bunch of other Bonneville,El-Mirage cars.In fact at age 77 he is building a flathead powered streamliner amongst other things
Jerry Slover has tried to buy the coupe a number of times but Frank has said that Jerry can buy it from his daughter after he dies.
I just saw this car this past weekend. There is a post somewhere that I did. I also have some interior shots that have not been uploaded into photobucket yet but I will do that if someone needs them.....it is a really slick car ! You can see a guy whit white curly hair in some of the shots....seemed like he was the driver or owner...
The Bush Pilot emblem was on the car because of Jim's other passion-- Flying--- He was 1 hell of a pilot until that bad day happened.
That old guy with the curly white hair is my best buddy since 1965, and owner/caretaker of the Super Bell Coupe, Frank Morawski. We met when we were both in the Army and stationed at Edgewood Arsenal, MD. He's been a key player in my hobby and fiberglass business for over 40 years. He still does custom fiberglass work. PM me if you need a quality craftsman for your fiberglass project.
The white haired guy is definitely the owner. He has been doing little odds and ends to the coupe getting it ready to head for the west coast next month. It will be at the GNR Show as well as the Peterson museum shortly. Frank let me sit in it a couple of weeks ago and lord knows how anyone could drive it cross country. The aluminum panels on this car are truely a work of art and thanks to Frank it has been preserved for many more to see.
In progress 1/18th diecast model. Hand formed nose and hood. Might even complete it one day! Geoff aka whodaky
I agree with Tommy, the REAL car is in good hands with Frank, and yes it is in the greater Baltimore area. Enclosed is a photo that I took at least two decades ago of the car. I think it might be the Tulsa Nats??? Anyway, enjoy. Jay
That white haired guy needs help getting on the HAMB!!! Clark ol55 That white haired guy needs to buy a computer first !! Venza guilted me into getting him setup and online. He is busy right now with the roadster and his car fot the shows on the west coast. as soon as he is ready, I'm going over and get him going <!-- / message --><!-- sig -->
Little known fact,Jim found the paint for the coupe in a salvage yard . It was also the paint that was on yeagers x-1.Goverment surplus.
Somebody here in Houston owned the Jim Ewing Super Bell Coupe for some years. (I'm wrong about the above, it was the Vern Luce COupe that was here in Houston for years and may still be. Sorry.) The California Kid was the Pete & Jake's car, built by Pete Chapouris, called it "Ol' Rattler" in the Gargae Scene feature in Rod & Custom decades ago.. The Yellow Car with the 37 Pickup grille was built by Jim Jacobs, who also restored the Niekamp Roadster, the 1st AMBR Trophy Winner.
I kind of feel honored to be helping one of the guys that people will be talking about as one of the Hot Rod masters in years to come. It turns out he built a 55 chevy frontend for a guy I knew. It was beautiful.
I found these while digging around in my old pic's for another post. Most are from the nats east in Timonium and the last one parked next to my 40 is from York nats east BITD......
I know its an old thread but I wanted to share this old photo I took in Winston Salem NC. I caught his coupe right as it passed under a SuperX sign. How ironic.
There are certain threads that are priceless and should be refreshed - no 'best by' date on them. I am surprised this has not been posted on this thread yet - RIP Jim Ewing and Dave Bell....
As you said Weasel, some things never get old! I'm shocked nobody has scanned and printed the original article on this car with what in my opinion was the best ever set of tires and wheels it ever wore. I likes the Halibrands, but the fifteen inchers were always a bit small to my eye on this car... This article is some of Baskervilles best work too! Miss them all, Ewing, Bell and Baskerville.
