Also of note on the Golden Penny were the "molded" side pipes that weren't even attached to the car. He would just lay them on the ground, up against the rockers!
A proper '50s-60s era custom car should have a scoop, somewhere. My Chrysler will be getting one. I have the hood from a '70s Jeep Wagoneer in the shop that I think is a perfect candidate with its broad, flat shape and subtle peak. I think I'll be able to get it to work fairly easily.
Rog I think your lower scoop looks like a fighter jet air intake scoop,it is perfect just the way it is. Rick
That rear 1/4 panel scoop on the 53 Chevy in post #1 is certainly a different idea that I think works real well. First I ever saw this done on that year/make and it looks good.
The Hirohata Merc represents a real mile post in custom evolution, toward a more ornate style...scoops, teeth, lips, two-tone paint, heavy side trim, etc. Chuck DeWitt's shoebox continued the trend. Soon thereafter, Dean Jeffries would help further open the floodgates with his striping brush, and there was no looking back! (Until the HAMB, of course. ) Some random 'shoes'.
Great thread and topic. Way to get things rolling Sancho . Mick , I always thought at the door where the body line curves then goes straight. A small grill or opening of some kind . Some in front of the fender skirts . They will need to follow the curve of the backside of the side glass. But then again I get confused and need tools taken away from me.

Okay, back on track. The Bailon version of the 'California Nugget' '57 Chevy was my favorite version of that car, with the whole mouth of the car essentially part of the scoop. 'round back. And speaking of Bailon, the scoops on Frank Livingston's Chevy sure stood out from the pack. (And the car!) Realistically, Bailon 'scooped' the whole field at the starting blocks, starting with 'Miss Elegance'!
Side scoop on my brother's '54 Cadillac... The stock '54 Caddy quarter trim was removed, scoop opened up and another "scoop" added above it to mimic the front fender/headlight body line. An extra piece of front fender trim was added to the rear quarter and the trim was cut for a spot for the skull (The skull in now gone and in its place a glass Cadillac emblem has been added) as well as five chrome "spears" to accent the scoop....note that the picture above is the pre-flamed version... R-
I'd be interested in finding a source or identification of the variety of chrome spears that someone adding scoop's today would use. We can't just go on down to the junk yard and get trim from several cars to make up a set. Suggestions?
Ill start this with 1954 Mercury Rear Fender Spears. They are readily available as repops. I have seen these types of spears in different lengths too. Anyone else like to add ideas?
Love the shots from the "little books" - you could make a "Whose kustom is this?" trivia game from some of them.
