It’s been a long-time dream but really got going 12 months ago whilst driving to the Grand Canyon, we randomly stepped off I 40 and started down Route 66……Bagdad Café, Amboy, Essex, Oatman, Williams,……..could we come back and drive all of it……?

So with Christmas (2013) out of the way we started to plan, pretty straight forward really, fly in pick up a hire car, drive to the HAMB Drags and onwards to California and the Ventura Nationals, fly home.

It soon became obvious it was not going to be enough to satisfy our desire just to drive Route 66…… we needed to do this in something classic….. After being diagnosed with { and surviving } Breast Cancer nearly 3 years ago my wife has taken a more ‘today’ not tomorrow attitude, none of us know what’s around that corner ……..so we needed to do this, and do it now.……

Inspired thanks to several threads on here….

We convinced ourselves to buy a 1950 shoebox, so through the HAMB we found what we thought was a good solid car in KS and got the deal done, after talking to Ryno it was decided to ship the car {Thanks Ben D} to him for a check over and some upgrades to the steering and suspension and brakes. We could do the first part of our journey in a hire car drop this off in Joplin; pick up the 50 cruise to the HAMB Drags and beyond.

The car is fitted with a 302/C4 slightly lowered and stock interior; the plan is to get this a reliable driver for the 2,500-3,000 miles were aiming to put on it,

Here’s the car sat at Ryno’s shop.

On one of his many trips travisfromkansas visited Ryno’s shop and found our shoebox parked waiting start.

  4. I'm hooked and following the build/adventure! HRP

  5. You'll have to let me know how it drives with the MII front, I know some guys have had gigantic turning circles with those.

  6. I have a friend that has a mustang II front suspension under his '50 coupe and there is absolutely no problem with the steering radius. HRP

  7. It might have been a different front suspension I'm thinking of, maybe one of the Cavalier kits?

heres a few more of the front mm2 install. the stock frame is way too wide, so the kit comes with new frame rail sections. lots of cutting..

been slacking with the pics updates.
got the fire wall mounted booster and master cylinder fitted up. used a jw rod garage universal set up.
i took the dash mount and flipped it up on the top side of the channel and welded it to the top, and welded to the dash inner structure. trim off 2 of the 6 hole positions.

got the new tilt column mounted up and fab'd the new mounts. lower is a pitch style made up of tubing and sheet metal. upper is using the stock lower dash plate, modified to fit the new diameter.
