What are brand names and sources for supplied air hoods?
    Which do you like?

I have an Allegro 9901 Full Face Mask for Supplied Air Respirator
It fits nice and is a quality unit.
I also have a bunch of peel off visor protectors that are made for it and work well.

I have the hobby air turbine to supply the breathing air to the Allegro mask . The hobby air masks are poor quality.

  9. I'm currently in the process of painting my off topic truck in my Quonset with a gravel floor, far from a show truck but more than a respectable job!

The value of my lungs?? HAHA Too late! The doctor says a loss of 25% capacity. Yeah, doc, I could have told you that. Imron, 1975. I wore a mask but learned later it had the wrong filters . I'm getting old so it wont matter much longer but I definitely want to keep it from getting worse. I had been looking at the one you suggested on ebay. A credit card is a dangerous thing :) Thanks!

True enough for the credit card being dangerous.
One of the things that bothers me the most with this whole painting respiratory protection thing is what you see on all of the TV shows from Foose on Overhauling on down the list.

What I mean is that you never see the so called pros ever using much more than a cartridge respirator.
Mind you they are spraying in a downdraft booth but still....

Surprises me somewhat although I know that TV shows are a long way from reality :D

I am expecting to do fine in a garage booth with the reduced over spray that my turbine spray system will produce.

  15. The real world is not much different. I would be surprised if 50% of the painters I see wear supplied air systems. Thankfully the majority of the ones that do are the younger painters so it may be improving.

  16. Great thread! Hopefully later this year I'll get to the point of painting the 63.5 Falcon in my avatar.

  20. Here are the two most recent paint jobs. This is the fanciest job I have done; epoxy white sealer, pearl white intercoat, 3 coats House of Kolor lime gold candy, 3 coats clear, all catalyzed urethane. Bob Coslett did the striping, I have never got the hang of that.

  21. Here's a start on my first vehicle. Owned for 30 years. Bought it with paper route monies and help from my folks. Parked it under a tree in Tacoma after the loosey goosey steering box locked up when I gunned it out into traffic and I hit a parked car. [IMG][IMG]

Nice work to be sure however the spirit of this thread is painting at home without the fancy spray booth.

I like it. I see that you are doing what I intend to do. Drape everything with plastic and go at it.
I installed an exhaust vent and I'm building a filter box for the industrial snail cage blower that I have.
    They really move air.
That will take care of overspray which there should be less of with the HVLP system.

I keep wondering if I should spray with the gun I have and already know well, or if I should go buy an HVLP rig.

I'm a hobbiest, so not painting too much.

I'd stay with what you have. I'm in the same boat, bought a new HVPL gun but just don't trust myself with it. Use it for jamming so far. Still not comfortable with it. I too am a hobbyist so the infrequent painting just doesn't give me much practice with the new gun.

Put up a cheap canopy on a slab, screens in one end and a fan in the other. Sprayed early in the mornings. I only had a couple bugs (re-sprayed) It came out pretty good for my first paint job in forty five years. DSC05917-001.JPG DSC06037-001.JPG DSC06070.JPG DSC06938-01.jpg

  28. If you don't paint much then you probably haven't really developed any insurmountable habits painting with your old gun. HVLP's will save you a ton on materials which are not cheap these days. You just have to be aware that more paint is actually making it to the surface (which is the idea of painting) with an HVLP and adjust your speed accordingly.
