Hi All, I am a FNG—my first post. Just found out about your forum on Xmas eve. Here is some items to ponder. I don’t claim to be knowledgeable on the Batmobile but had the following experiences.
2005—I was in Southern California and visited Barris’ shop. George was there and pointed to a door and said the Batmobile was in there. It was a garage and per George, held the original Batmobile, what he called a promotional Batmobile and the Original Monkey Mobile which he had just finished restoring. If I can figure out how to upload photos, I’ll try to do so. Side by side, they cars were very easy to spot the differences. If sitting alone, and you were not an expert, you would likely not spot the non tv car. I asked him how many were made for the show, and George said six. He added that a “number of others” were made later on a special order basis. Based on some other threads here about Barris, you can make up your own mind on the accuracy of what he told me.
Also in 2005, I stopped at Daryl Starbird’s museum in Oklahoma. He and I got talking and I mentioned the Batmobile. He said, I have a fiberglass body for one. I was going to do one, but probably won’t now. I got my body from Barris. According to Starbird, Barris would sell you a body if you were willing to pony up the $$$. Starbird said he knew of at least 15 bodies floating around the country, purchased from Barris like his was.
Scott V—I attended a model building convention in 1995 in Omaha Nebraska. In the convention hall a guy had his Batmobile on display which I believe is the one you mentioned. He was in law enforcement at the time (as was I) and we talked. He had a bunch of stuff including photos, bill of sale from the studio (I think it was Paramount-but can’t remember). My wife and his wife got hanging around together and on the closing day of the convention, he gave my wife a ride in it from the doorway of the convention hall to his trailer. According to him, a friend or relative (again—don’t remember exactly) worked for the studio in California and was told to get rid of a bunch of junk cars on the back lot. When he got looking, one was a VERY delapadated tv batmobile. Knowing the guy in Nebraska (his friend) was a huge batman fan, he called him. A deal was struck and the NE guy bought the batmoblie from the Studio and had it restored. He said that the batman tv show “experts” claim it could not be a tv car but why would a studio have a car in the back lot, overgrown with weeds and obviously left for dozens of years, have a Batmobile if they had not used it for the show. I have no idea but it was intriquing.
Road Oilers—The one in Florida was at Klassix Museum down the street from Daytona Speedway. Mark Martin did not own or run that Musuem. He got paid to loan his name to it and displayed some of his cars, like his IROC winning car, and a couple of Winston Cup cars there. The owner of Klassix was of dubious ethics and apparently had a number of cars on display that were supposed to be the real thing but were actually creations his restoration guys built up. The Batmobile on display was supposed to be a bonafide tv car. When the Klassix owner went broke and the stuff he owned in the musuem were put up for auction, the fraud came out and the Auction company looked really bad declaring the Batmobile the real deal. Autoweek magazine did an article on that fiasco titled “The Duped Crusader”.

  3. It was one of the nicest cars Ford ever built, Barris hung stuff on it and painted it. I remember seeing it at the Rotundra when I was a kid and so was the Futura. It was a dreamcar.

  4. I didn't read everyones replies to this post so I apologize if this repeats anything. I saw one of the Barris Batmobiles on ebay several weeks ago for $850,000. It was quite a surprise that the car was on ebay in the first place and not a real auction house.

  5. If you guys go to http://www.1966batmobile.com you can get more info, there are a lot of replicas good ones and bad ones. Most of it is keeping the spirit of the 1966 Batman show alive.

There is also info on the 1955 Futura there http://1966batvehicles.yuku.com/forums/3/t/The-1955-Lincoln-Futura.html

There actually is a comapny called Fiberglass Freaks making offcially Licensed DC Comics 1966 Batman batmobiles here http://www.buybatparts.com/joomla/index.php

Apparently the real deal is metal.

I was beginning to wonder if I was the only person reading this thread who has the same thought: Whoever owns the original Futura should restore it to it's former glory as the beautiful and iconic car it was once, thereby correcting this travesty for all of history.

Fiberglass Freaks is selling officially licensed Batmobiles for ten grand off until the end of the year.

To follow-up on an earlier post most of us had Corgi Batmobiles as kids (or smaller scale Corgi Jr and Husky). Mattel Hot Wheels bought the rights a few years ago and scanned Barris' original.

Perhaps not quite as jarring as seeing the 1966 Batmobile I was shocked when this contemporary Batmobile passed me in New Jersey last year. It's owned by a police officer.

When they were filming the tv show only the real one was used. The other 3 were built and shown around the country at car shows.
