  1. Thanks for bringing back those memories. I've done that twice. Not fun.

Yep, bore to 4" and then use 371 pistons. That's the set up in my 32. C8EB42F1-B54A-4735-85D7-E40BCE036ACD.jpeg

These are probably a little rich for most guys but I just thought I'd post a link here in case anyone really wants some. Not mine, just an auction I thought someone might be interested. Pretty rare and not repopped to my knowledge. From what I understand this is how Olds upped the compression in the legit J2 engines. @Paul is this true? They sent me an offer of $140 for the 3 gaskets so if you're interested send them a message and they might make you a deal.

Yes, this is what I have heard from several sources.
I'll have to watch that sale, I may consider selling some of mine ;)

In my mind it would probably make more sense to just mill the heads during a rebuild but I guess given machine shop rates it might be the cheaper option for some.

Is there any difference between 1954-1956 324's besides the #10 heads. I was looking for a full gasket set for a 1955 324 and the felpro FS 7725 S-2 application lists only 54 and 56 NOT 55.

Gasket sets are the same for all 324s

There is probably no better feeling in the world than getting your Olds unstuck so you can take the hydro off without having to saw every rod off.

  16. I know what you mean. Had to flip one, pull all the caps and separate the hydro with the crankshaft still attached once.

If you're scrapping the Hydro, I could use the yoke!

Just picked up this 56 324. Check out the cast double water pump pully.
I heard it was out of a fire engine.

I've been partial to the "Rockets" since rebuilding Ak Miller's El Caballo. It had a 303 originally that was out to 370 ci, so when looking for a mill I bought a complete '58 Olds with the 371 ci, sincee it was close. Larry Spengler in San Pablo, CA put the engine together, and it wasn't that radical. Al Blazic did the balance, and I believe it was one of the last he did. Ak Miller and Ed Iskenderian reground the original camshaft, and he they never would tell me what the spec's were. Carburetion was similar to original, a Weiand Wo4D, with adaptors for the 4 97's. I used 48's i.l.o. 97's, just for size.... Needless to say, the engine ran great, and I tortured it for 10 years of vintage racing before giving the car to the NHRA Museum.... 371olds (2).jpg

    love it
my current hot rod is also running a '58 but with two 4 barrels (probably very similar to the 4 2's) and slightly warmed up stock cam.
just right for a light weight hot rod ;)

@cabong I remember you saying that about the cam before. Last fall I had Isky on the phone so I asked him about it but it must have been too long ago. I hoped I could jog his memory about it but he wasn't sure. Crazy the details he could still tell me about stuff on the engine in his roadster. That guy is amazing. If we all could be around that long and still be that sharp just think what we could get done!

I was rooting throught a junkyard years ago, and found a Chevy medium duty truck with an Olds in it with pulleys like that.

When you punch a 324 to use the 371 pistons which head gasket do you use? They both seem like they would work, looking at Best composite gaskets.
Gasket sealer? No sealer? What works best with the Best composite head gaskets?

Cool. That backs up what I heard about it being in a fire truck.

I used 371 head gaskets to match the bore.

  25. Paul, What brand are the valve covers in this top pic? I just scored a pair. I think they are the same. Have NN 65 I think cast on the underside.

Holy smoke Paul, I just re-examined the pictures via Curbspeeds quote, I think you win. What an amazing collection of Olds stuff.
I’m too short sighted, the few times I’ve run across stashes, instead of grabbing some cash and making a bee-line for it, I just think, where the hell would I put all that stuff? There’s always room for Olds stuff!

most of that stuff is gone now
used in a few projects and
sold off to fund other others.
fun to see it all in one pile.
