Cowling wheel I made for a customer in California
    Column is 3” en24 /4340 and out rigger arm is 2” 4340
It gets 16 swg steel going without flex as high strength steel will

Beautiful machine Mr. Lamb. Recently been looking for a quality wheel here in CA.
There was a gentlemen by the name of Ed Howarth (Excel Wheels) local to me who produced a wheel.
Not sure of the grade of iron he used but his wheels are considered to be of great quality and feel.

I am considering my own wheel design and read in a previous post you selected a grade 40 iron. If you would not mind sharing I would be curious as to your choice of iron. I am welder and machinist by trade with limited metallurgy knowledge.

As I understand class 40 has different dampening characteristics than lets say a 20 series as well
as modulus of elasticity. Maybe I am just over engineering this but any input or feedback would be appreciated.

    Regards,
    Mike Settele

    Progress
Ps 40 series as that’s the foundries preferred grade and strength. Modulus is pleasing for a wheel as well

Thanks for the reply. Looks reminiscent Of the Excel wheel. I was drawn to this design just for the mere fact that the upper and lower wheel bosses could be drilled in one operation with precise alignment. Well done.

Actually the 1940’s edwards d type was the inspiration!

Anyway I finally cast my 40” planishing hammer . Posted for interest as I made it strong enough to have a wheeling attachment and Louvre press
