  7. I know where that is! A couple blocks off Broadway across from the old G.E. plant. Did you come down here to paint that? I'd have come by for some lessons.

  9. Actually I painted it in the next town over from me(Adrian MI). That address was his old one when he lived in Fort Wayne if I recall correctly. The guy who owns it(Bill Miller)is a hoot. Just got married for the first time(he has to be close to my age)just before I lettered the truck. The vehicle is as hilarious as he is.Like most of us he has WAY too much fun.

  10. Don't believe I know him, but of course the name sounds familiar. Maybe involved in local racing or some other auto related business...? Tell him I said "Hi", just to keep him guessing. :p

  11. White paint & lettering was done about 1958 by a local sign painter for $25, I was told.

    Hello,

As backyard hot rodders, we always liked seeing our name(s) in print or magazines. The best way after building cars was to put a name on the side panels or doors. I was always impressed with gold leaf lettering and designs. I never knew how it was applied until I watched someone do it on his race car in 1964. The technique is very nerve racking and time consuming. It takes practice and a skillful hand, similar to a pinstriper. So, the final result looks outstanding and stands out from a distance. Check out Atts Ono’s immaculate gold leaf lettering and outlining on his red 40 Willys coupe. Not only was this Willys full of hand made, custom parts, but the fit and finish made it a true show car as well.

Here is a movie clip that I took in 1964 when Atts Ono arrived for his maiden voyage at Lions Dragstrip. It was at an exclusive, All Gassers Meet.

Well, don't know the Skrips, but I've been to Lamont (that's where Aldon Auto Salvage is), and also Tofield....haven't been out to Lamont since the very late nineties (my buddy moved back into the city), but even back then, from what some of the greybeards tell me, most of the good stuff was already gone by then........and their pricing on what was left was often "unrealistic".......

  23. Yep - took those pics probably 10 years ago - prices then were ridiculous...
