The guy that lettered the car ( Daniel ) used a pounce wheel and chalk dust ! Neat process to watch.

  18. Pounce bag or soapstone marker, maybe even a grease pencil. Some might simply go freehand?

Pouncing is ok as long as you dust off the excess chalk before starting paint.

I mostly prefer tick-on with a china marker, then freehand. This gives me an idea of where the letters will end up so I can make adjustments when writing to keep the text centralised.

or drawing my design onto paper, then chalking the back with french chalk or art powder.
Position the drawing where you want it then trace it through with a ball point pen which marks it out in chalk on the panel.
Again dust off any excess chalk and away you go.

Here's a bit I done on my roadster...I like to pick a colour between the letter colour and background colour (sorry should that be color?) so I don't have to be too neat with a one stroke shade.

I don't think it's cheating to use an applimask as I did on Page 2 or 3 of this thread as I was blending wet colours into the pumpkin and finished off the design freehand along with the lettering and shadow.

Oh and to add to the list, here's one I did a few months back. It's a copy of a design from a T-shirt the owner wanted on his truck (apparently the t-shirt wouldn't fit over the roof) :)

When you say "tick-on" what are you meaning? Drawing a grid pattern?

Nope , Easier to paint on the truck , where you can control the flow of the paint from the brush. You don't have that gravity thing try'n to suck the paint from the brush.
