    yup, it's a 4-71, the 3-71 has two ribs

also looks like the car may have had a McCulloch supercharger before this setup

The blower above looks kind of small compared to this 4/71, maybe just the angle?

6-71 four ribs on the case, 4-71 three ribs and the 3-71 only has two.

Sorry to interrupt the blower discussion, but figured this "scoop" set up would be enjoyed here
almost picked up a 4-71 at pleasanton this year, but couldn't justify it

That's a pretty good idea there looks like they made an adapter and used the stack injection that probly had been on it before the blower but it's damn kool and look at the Beatty drive that's awesome

Yeah, the chain drive is certainly entertaining, anyone know when the Gilmer belts were introduced? would help date this photo.

Looks like a V belt drive to me.

  16. That is my friend, the late Nick Cirino's, blown olds in the Cirino & Groves roadster. They ran injected for a while, then went to the blower. Had no money for another injector, so welded up a pyramid adapter to use the port injector on the blower. Ran good enough to go 150 on gas. The photo is at the March meet, 1959.

Saltflats is correct it's a vbelt drive most chain drives were a single chain I have seen dual chains once on a roadster here locally that was last ran in 1959 but that was many years ago and sadly I didn't get a pic nor know what happened to it. Dean I get it if that was me running even today I wouldn't have the coin and would do the same thing now I miss the ingenuity that was done then the innovation back then is outstanding to me

    Hey Dean,

That was one cool roadster every time we saw it at the drags. Great info and history. One of the best images of the Cirino & Groves, Durfee Automotive Roadster was given credit to Getty Images.

I remember this roadster at Bakersfield March, 1960. The blown Olds powered roadster by Cirino, Groves and Durfee made a lot of noise every time it ran. As far as images are concerned, is hard to compete with the photos from the Getty Images photographers’ page. Those big negatives are hard to beat. Their photo shows a later version without those wild pipes.

This is a movie clip I took in 1960 that looks like a still photo.

At the time, (March-April 1960) we were considering doing a rebuild on our 40 Willys with supercharging. We considered the Howard Cam Chain Drive and the V-belt set up. The information we got was that the chain drive was the most positive as there was little slippage. The V-Belts had lots of slippage due to the big time horsepower spinning around. But, by the time of the Bakersfield meet, there were some Gilmer Wide Belt Drives already on the market, but not for the SBC.

Finally, around May or June, we were able to get our hands on a new Isky Gilmer Belt Drive unit for our Reath modified 671, on the newly rebuilt, 292 C.I. SBC. We were shooting for more horsepower for the run at those B/Gas and C/Gas hot shots. Almost is the result by the end of August 1960.

I have used this photo from October 1960 of Bones Balogh’s 671 SBC in his race car, on other posts. Until I find our "lost" 40 Willys coupe photos, it is as close to the actual set up of our 671 Isky-Gilmer drive on our 40 Willys back in May or June of 1960. It was one of the first ones on an SBC powered race car.

  20. Durfee Auto Parts owner, Jim Steel, was Nick's sponsor. I knew Jim too. Durfee Auto Parts was on Durfee Ave. in El Monte, just a few blocks from our shop. During the week the roadster would sit out front in the parking lot. Jim was a good machinist and did the machine work on Nick's Olds motor.

  21. Dean and jnaki, thanks for posting the history lesson. I find this stuff highly intersting, and entertaining at the same time. Yea I run a 471, and proud of it. Even if I put a 671 on I will keep the 471. I have never seen anyone around here with a 471, except me.;):)

  23. Nothing wrong with a 4-71. I ran this one in 62-63, and loved it. If I had a 4-71 now instead of the 6-71 on my current RPU, I would be happy to run it.
