“This 1941 Studebaker was purported to be the first "real" Gasser for racer Doug "Cookie" Cook. While he raced his 1937 Chevy Coupe in the Gasser classes all over SoCal (with a blown Chevy small block under the hood), the '37 was really Doug's street car. This Studebaker was modified to be strictly a Gasser from the git-go, and probably was using Doug's blown small block out of his Chevy Coupe. This was the natural order of things back in the day.”
LOOK AT THE SINGLE HILBORN INJECTOR! A Howard Cam Special idea

    Hey MM,

Where in the world was there ever a listed ad for a single Hilborn Injector for the top of 471 or 671 superchargers? In the 1959-60 time period, I happened to take some movies of the Howard Cam Twin Bear SBC FED in the pits and racing at Lions Dragstrip. Little did I know (back then I probably did talk to Howard Johansen) that the single 3 inch injector was one of a kind and only several local race cars had them. In looking at this portion of film, I just overlooked the single injector as we are all accustomed to seeing a twin injector on top.

The Hilborn Injector company history is vast, but never mentions a single injector for those superchargers. But, here is an early supercharged Studebaker sedan for the Gas Coupe and Sedan Class. It is one of Howard Johansen’s creations with Doug Cook driving. LOOK AT THAT GIANT SINGLE INJECTOR STICKING UP IN THE AIR. Most of us, if not all of us missed that anomaly.

Then, in the late 59-early 1960 era, the Twin Bear appears and what is on each of the GMC superchargers? A giant single Hilborn Injector. So far, there are very few if any other Hilborn Single Injector photos on any motor around. They may be lurking somewhere in the vast internet files, but they were quickly replaced by larger twin Hilborn Injector Models for the GMC superchargers by 1960. We had one set of Hilborn Twin Tube Injectors on order for our 671 SBC motor in late July of 1960. The top racers in the Gas Coupe and Sedan Class were switching over to the two port Hilborn Injector Systems.

In a recent interview with Donnie Johansen, he mentioned that back in that time period, a single Hilborn Injector was used on the Twin Bear FED. It was one of a kind for the Howard Cam Twin camp. But, he said that there were some others in circulation, not many, but still out there somewhere. Then he said that one single set up is still around in his current shop.

So, being asked, “Why a single?” It was a large opening and did well on the Twin SBC at the drags. (diameter approximately 3-3.5 inches) But, with the advent of Hilborn’s latest creation, the two port injectors, that replaced the single big unit for more power. And…more power it gave, with wins at all of the major drag racing championships and speed records along the way for the Howard Johansen’s Twin Bear.

    Thanks for the information, Donnie…

I'm not a flathead guy, but I looked at this photo again because of the custom intake and noticed the throttle shaft standoffs/pivots that are made using connecting rods.
    That's pretty ingenious.

  12. Haven't had anything to post on here for a while, but just picked up this Weiand 440 mopar tunnel ram for my boat. Made a huge mistake a few years ago and sold my big block chrysler blower intake at the big 3! Wish I had it now! Weiand-5987-Stage-II-Tunnel-Ram-Mopar.jpeg
