The Hemi Valve Cover Gallery- Post pics here

Wow, those are rare. A friend on mine here in Mass. has/had a pair. He was talking to Gene Mooneyham one day about blower stuff on the phone and was told by Gene that there was only a short run of the M & S (Mooneyham and Sharp) Chrysler Hemi valve covers made. The tooling went to Dean Moon and that's where today's Moon-Eyes covers came from. I believe they were used on the Breedlove streamlined AA/F dragster that was featured in Hot Rod Magazine. Anyone have that issue handy? I think the car was on the cover.

 

I made this tool from a piece of scrap oak wood to modify stock sparkplug tubes. clamp the tube in the block and use a small ballpeen hammer to flatten about a 1/4" wide rim. This modified tube will capture a stock hemi rubber seal for a leak free tube without need for the big washer and sparkplug wire pans. Also I use Toyota sparkplug tube seals (the ones with the letter R embossed on the top). Just trim off the big outer rim on the bottom of the seal so it fits flat on the tubes. I run Accel plug wires with the long silicone boots. Superior to the porcelain stock tubes. Sold those on ebaY.

I remember when you did the embossing tech, man those look good plated. This is VERY cool. Lotta guys are going to be standing around scratching their heads when this is done.

I picked up a 331 Chrysler Hemi, just a few weeks ago. I'm going to paint the valve covers, so I need to get them to the chrome shop, to strip the old plating off. I started removing a few dents and the wire cover studs.

 

I painted mine (392) grey, painted "Chrysler Fire Power" same as car color (dark burgundy). Have now replaced them with Hot Heads, but still have the originals.

 

Just for fun- Before you strip them soak them in wood bleach. Oxalic acid.

 

that's the plan!!!

 

If they were cherry to begin with, I might of tried removing the rust and cleaning the chrome. I like them painted.

Most of the early drag/street car modifications in the late 50’s and early 60’s changed over from the flathead to the SBC. But, there were still the hard core racers that still wanted to utilize the biggest, baddest motor around. Big in size and big in horsepower. Many racers jumped from the SBC to the big hemi motors because they wanted more horsepower. The average weight was 500lbs SBC vs 700lbs hemi motor. But the power range was no comparison. The hemi motors had much more horsepower to begin with in stock form.

So, out went the flatheads, in go the SBC, out goes the SBC, in went the big hemi motors for max horsepower. A great example were the gasser ranks. As the need for speed increased, more hemi motors came on the scene. Of course, the feds had the same story. Flatheads ruled, then the SBC, and finally the big hemi motors. Here are a few examples of early hemi motors from the late 50’s to the 60’s.

The twin hemi motor on the hydro hull in 1967 Long Beach, was very fast and usually caught the opponent before the finish line. (see boat drags thread)
