The Great Tucker Tour started this week after years of planning from Tacoma WA. The first stop was a visit to Tucker #1007. We'll attempt to see all 40+ US based 1948 Tuckers this year and with any luck catch England, Japan, Brazil, and Australia in the next year or so. Because of privacy there will be some cars on the tour that won't be mentioned here.

The 1948 Tucker is a unique and historic automobile. Only 50 Tuckers were built in 1948 (plus the hand built prototype) as the Company struggled to get the car into mass production. While the story of Preston Tucker may be well known due to the release of the 1988 movie, Tucker: A Man and His Dream, the story of what happened to the 50 cars has never been told.

The Great Tucker Tour seeks to find the answers as to the history of each car over the last 63 years and how have the cars held up. Out of the 50 cars produced at the plant, 4 were destroyed in accidents over the years and 6 are outside North America. The remaining 40 are in the hands of Museums, Private Owners, and Restoration Experts in the United States and Canada. The goal of the Great Tucker Tour is to visit all 40 of those cars this year. An effort will be made to photograph and document the present condition of the cars along with verifying parts and serial numbers on the cars. The present owners will be asked about their experiences with their cars and all the information will be documented for use by future automotive historians.

Stop back for updates. Part One: 8,000 miles, 30 Tuckers in 3 weeks, Can it be done? We'll know soon!

Here is a route map of Part One of the Great Tucker Tour

Your route takes you through Madison, WI. You should stop in to see the "Convertable" Tucker. If you believe it was a real car or not im sure it would be inturesting

Tucker #1007 is a nice looking car. Nancy and Doug LeMay are wonderful people. If you're headed to see the car this summer make sure to call ahead. It will be in Portland OR for a few weeks beginning late this month. The owner of Tucker #1017 will be at the LeMay in late August with a awesome car called the Fascination. Even though he won't have his Tucker there I'm sure he'll talk to you about it.

Wanted to see the Convertible but found out a few weeks ago it was sold to a guy in XXXXXXX just outside XXXXX. If Mr. New Owner happens to read this I'd love to see your car. You'll notice I've even added your top secret city to the route if you'll let me look it over.

Sorry, this is for real and not spam. The Blackhills used to have a Tucker in Murdo but it is now in sunny California being pampered and receives an all over body waxing on a regular basis. Ahhh...the life of a Tucker in California.

The two Coppola Tuckers and the Lucus Tucker are on the list of cars to be seen following the Tucker Convention later this month. Hopefully I won't be Tuckered out after that.

your route doesn't show you going to VIRGINIA.. where I thought you could see 3 at one shot?

Its obvious that you'll be in Huntington, PA but I thought that the Swigart had sold theirs?

  16. Great to see Tucker fans here.
Ive been interested in them since i discovered them over 25 years ago.
This should be a fantastic thread.

Actually there are 4 in the Washington DC area but scheduling did not permit a stop there on Part One of the Tour.

The two Tuckers at Swigart are still there. You may be thinking of the Tucker that was at the San Diego Museum that was recently sold. Otherwise no Tuckers have changed hands.

the Tuckers were built in the chicago area from what i understand. My father in law told me he worked in the cafeteria as a young man. All employees were offered the chance to buy a car if they wanted. He chose not to as he was a "FORD" man. Did he screw up or what!!

When I would visit my Dad in Sarasota FL during the 80s/early 90s, we always went back to the "Cars of Yesterday" museum at the airport to look at an amazing collection, including a Tucker. :)

When you came through Michigan and stop at the Gilmore car museum, you will enjoy the very nice Tucker exhibit, just one small part of a first class car museum.

When you do come to the Washington, DC area, I hope you can time it so you can make it to some of the car shows and cruise ins in the area as well. If you do October, remember that Fall Carlisle is the first weekend in October, Hershey, the second weekend in October, and the AACA antique car show in Rockville, Maryland the third weekend of October. Hershey and Carlisle are only a two hour drive from DC, and the antique car show in Rockville was the first place I ever saw a Tucker. I live in northern Virginia and I've never seen the Tucker collection in Alexandria.
There are of course other car shows and cruise ins in the area as well that you might enjoy.

  21. Spam? What are you talking about??

Very cool tour! What a way to enjoy the summer!! Good luck on your tour.

  22. My father worked for the Tucker organization back when. He was a regional sales manager. I have a brief case full of old Tucker literature in my safe. My father actually owned #24 for a number of years. He received it in lieu of back pay due him. The car is now in the posession of Bill Smith of Speedway Motors in Lincoln, NE. I am assuming this will be one of the stops on the tour.

Your Tour needs to make a slide through St. Louis for gas, oil, water & snacks !

In our St. Louis Museum Of Transportation, you can check-out the RARE one-off "Bobby Darrin" / Di Dia Custom Ride (pictured above), AND, one of the Chrysler Turbine Cars...PLUS everyone there would love to see that there TUCKER !

That would make your father Jesse Tallent? Did he own Dallas Tucker Sales or just work there? Do you know who he sold the car to and when? It ended up with Bobby Burns in Wichita Falls TX. I am curious as to how he got it.
