I know this is your thread but here’s what we did today. Was hoping to add video but can’t seem to do that from my phone.

If this is a one time deal renting one is still cheaper even at $75 a day. Plus you don't have it laying around in the way when not in use.

  20. What, as a boat anchor??? A 327/365 SB will get that plastic moving just nicely. Of course, you'll have to get used to the music of the solids.:)

    Hey E,
That 396 + 4 speed sound very good. That combo was in a 65 Chevelle in 1965, stock from the factory. But, it was not in the 65 El Camino when I tried to order one with the 396. I missed out by one year. My factory order was a stock 327 with a 4 barrel and an auto transmission. It was a very reliable form of transportation for college and out to the deserts for motorcycle racing during vacations.

Many times, I took my friend from Long Beach, out to the desert in my 327 65 El Camino for our Hare and Hound races. It got great gas mileage, was powerful enough for two bikes, necessary tools and parts and overnight camping stuff in the back. My motor choice was not the most powerful, but it was so reliable over the years following, that it had 125k plus miles when I sold it 12 years later.

Not one major repair or problem with the whole El Camino during those years. I found out it was built in Fremont, CA on a Wednesday, if that helped. If I could have afforded the most powerful 327 at the time like BC mentioned, that would have been nice, too.

One year later to be exact, the same friend drove over to my house in his new 1966 El Camino. Guess what motor combo he had? Yes, a 396 and 4 speed. I immediately wanted to trade straight across for my 327 auto El Camino. But, I liked the styling/color of the 1965 better, so I was envious of the power combo, but satisfied.

That combo of 396 + 4 speed was perfect for being a daily driver and for the long road trips to the deserts. We even went to Baja for several beach sand/salt water/hard dirt/deep gully motorcycle racing along the coast line in the 66 El Camino. The year before, we went in my 65 to Baja and the 396 had it many times over in power going up those steep roadways during the road trips.

Both choices are good for your application as they will have power to spare. You just have to decide which will be easier to install and make reliable for all of your needs. At this point, you have all of your play toys, so this one seems like it has to be a reliable family car for all purposes. You make the choice as to the availability of motor combos and dent in the pocket book.

One summer 1966 night, My friend and I exchanged El Caminos for the Saturday night evening. He wanted to use my El Camino because it had less hindrances inside of the two seat cab. I was able to cruise around in his 4 speed/396 and it was a very strong set up for just about anything. A few surprised cruisers on Cherry Avenue and Westminster Boulevard were surprised at what the 396 El Camino could do on the street. Outside it looked like a Plain Jane with black rims and small hubcaps. After the speed shifts and the quarter mile, they were not smiling anymore. My 327 65 El Camino, was a reliable, trouble-free cruiser that just fit my needs and pocketbook at the time.

No racing for me this year, the car needs major upgrades and my project list is overloaded at the time.
Hope to get started on it this winter.

  26. Ah ha!! That changes everything.:) I say go for it!! Yet, let me throw out some food for thot. I understand completely the costs in obtaining a 409, but what about a 348? That was still available in '61 in several hp ratings, so it wud be period correct, and it wud pull the wagon without any trouble.

Darrin and I got the headers put on the Corvette this past weekend. I took it to the muffler shop today.
It sounds pretty good. Ethan and I will be heading out to Bowling Green in the morning. If you see us stop us and say hey. 57F1EB3C-06EC-4329-B2B0-8A13BEA9D973.jpeg
