    Hello,

In 1957, my brother had the bright idea of building a Model A hot rod coupe. His friend had a 34 Ford 5 window coupe with a big Oldsmobile motor, 6 Strombergs and a LaSalle transmission. It was a daily driver and I saw it almost every week at our house in the Westside of Long Beach. My brother already had a daily driver 51 Oldsmobile sedan and it looked fine to me.

But, if we did build a Model A coupe, it would have looked similar to the 34 coupe, with a little bit different look and motor set up. The 34 looked chopped and the swept back grille made it look fast. So, our Model A coupe was rather tall and need some attitude.

We found an old Model A coupe under a canvas tarp in a backyard about a mile from our house. We had seen it on the streets with an older couple driving around. But, we also saw it covered up for a few months toward the summer. We approached the older lady and offered to buy the Model A. She surprised us and said if we moved it out today, she would sell it at a good discount.

We bought it, moved it out from the tall grassy area and added a thick dock line to the Oldsmobile sedan. we pulled it home to start cleaning it up.

Well, it was nice, after finagling with it using new parts, the motor ran and it drove fine. We got it totally clean and were ready to start our project. My brother already had plans for a SBC motor and transmission along with a Chevy rear end. So, that was a big part. But, after a few weeks, that turned into a month, it got sold to another friend to fund his new purchase. He also sold his 51 Oldsmobile sedan to another friend and now sat a black 58 Impala in our driveway.

Over the years I always thought of the possible Model A coupe build. Then it faded and then it was gone for quite some time. During our Photographic Works era, we decided to get a sedan delivery and move along in our own married life. It took us everywhere along with our El Camino.

But, running into a lot of folks with roadsters, we looked into finding one that we could work on to get it to a reliable stage. There is something about women and convertibles plus a roadster is a convertible… My wife was already picturing herself driving it all over So Cal. So, that idea lingered until we decided that roadsters are for daytime usage and a “no sight” parking security was going to be a factor.

Just in case we decided on a roadster, the Model A roadster would have similar qualities of the coupe build idea from 1957, but with a few newer more stylish accessories to allow us to cruise all over. Something was going to suffer as we only had a small two car garage. So, the 62 Corvair would certainly go first.

We were so tied into the 65 El Camino and the 40 Sedan Delivery that we just could not delve into building an open roadster, although it was creeping up the list of “things to do,” very fast. The El Camino would have to suffer and stay parked outside in the daily barrage of salt air and still be our favorite daily driver.

    Hey @edcodesign
One of the elements of your work, that I really appreciate is, the weekly consistency of getting the proportions correct!
