Jeff, I want to say up front, if this isn't appropriate here I'll post this on the main board. To all of my artist friends, I need your help. My artwork has been directly copied and sold to "Thunder sportswear"(thundersportswear.com) by Steve McDonald, an artist based in Azle, TX. I have documentation of this fact supplied by Thunder sportswear. In the image below, my artwork is on top. the lower image is an enlarged section of what Steve McDonald supplied Thunder sportswear. Ironically the whole image reads, "Drive it like you stole it".

I was supplied Steve McDonalds Phone number and address by Thunder sportswear. My first call to him went unanswered. When I called a second time his phone was disconnected.
I need help in contacting Mr. McDonald. If anyone knows how to contact him, please let me know, or contact him yourself and give him my e-mail ([email protected]).
Thunder sportswear has cooperated so far but will be recieving a letter from my lawyer within the next week. I would like to settle this with with Mr. McDonald without lawyers, but I WIll take this as far as I need to.
He is "linked" to a few artists that post here and other places on "linkedin"
I think every artist should check out www.thundersportswear.com, and www.stevemcdonaldartist.com to make sure none of your artwork has been stolen.

Willie Gillis Drives A Hot Rod or The Willie Gillis Special

 There is a little story behind this image. A few years ago, I received an e-mail from one of my old art professors, whom I hadnt spoken to in 5 years, telling me that the Saturday Evening Post was doing some kind of retrospective on Rockwell and were taking submissions from artists. They were looking for images that captured the spirit of Normans work. Problem was, I only had two days before the proposal submission deadline. I quickly whipped up a rough sketch and this tighter line drawing and sent them in. I still havent heard anything back.something tells me I wont, either. It was really just meant to be tongue in cheek. Anyways, I was digging through my files and found the line drawing and thought Id post it up.

Del Swanson: Brother, I feel your pain. It has and is happening to me right now. The FAS gives a lot of decent people something to enjoy every week and many are inspired to create something of their own which is the best part of the FAS. Unfortunately there are a few low life scumbags out there who treat this show like a giant swipe file, print or sell other people's ideas as their own to make a cheap buck. You have a blog - Use it! One of the most effective things you can do globally is to create search engine words associated with his name and expose the copycat for what he is: thief, fraud, copycat, idea robber, child stealer, puppy killer, baby hater, idea stalker and on and on. Then when the next unsuspecting client googles his name they'll find out where the ideas really come from.

Sorry to hear this has happened to you, Del! That really sucks! That idiot emailed me about 2 years ago offering to pay me a small percentage of profits from tee shirt sales if I let him use some of my art. Basically told him to piss off. I hightly doubt I still have the email from him but I'll check.

He didn't even try to alter Del's artwork to make it less obvious. Makes it easier to get caught I guess.

Some guys just use the images as desktop art...not EVERYONE is a thief. I've had my artwork stolen and it's not easy to go after them unless you want to spend time and money doing it. If it was how I made my living and I had a name or brand to protect I would follow through, but unless you are making big bucks and can afford an attorney to fight these battles, fighting intellectual property suits is not cost effective.

Great show everyone! Nothing from me unless I can squeeze something in later tonight...
I'm kinda out of commission for the next 3 weeks as I work on getting into a new job at a studio much closer to home. Hoing it frees me up, a bit to create more and better automotive art during my much needed evenings and on week ends. What ever those are...

Keep 'em coming all! Wish me luck with my prints at a big show in Gretna NE. Stop by and introduce yourselves local guys and gals!!!

Here are some pics of 2 or 3 panels I've been burning on lately. The one with the portrait and two race cars on it is in memory of a close friend who was murdered during the Chili Bowl Midget Nationals this year. Donnie Ray Crawford is his name. This panel will be auctioned off at the race labor day weekend being put on in his memory.

I agree with the intrinsic disrespect comment. I've created hundreds of logos and websites, taken thousands of photos, cartooned hundreds of cars, created thousands of t-shirt designs, etc. all over the last 25 years. I get the aggravation and anger part...I've been there and had many designs blatantly stolen, copied and reproduced without permission, and likely many more without my knowledge.

What I'm saying here is that you cannot automatically assume that everyone who likes something, or even downloads it, is a thief. Watermark it so it is obscured, then no one can use it unless they go through the trouble of actually recreating it. If I don't watermark something, copyright it, or put my name blatantly somewhere on it, I'm assume it will likely be copied. If it's a photo of a cool car or something I've gotten a lot of mileage out of, I'm not terribly worried. However, if someone profits off it, or represents it as their own, I'll become one of their worst enemies.

What happened here to Del is wrong on so many levels that I want a piece of this guy when Del is done with him, but we're not all bad guys...especially fellow artists who know what goes into creating a work of art. Many times I download the images just so I can admire them, and maybe learn something from them. As artists, are we all about honing our skills and broadening our vision?

I agree about having a morgue of other artists work. I have a bunch and don't see a problem with people having my work to look at or maybe even learn from. I learned (and continue to do so) how to draw and paint by looking at how other artists solve artistic problems, and by looking at everything around me. I don't mind that as long as it's for personal use, not making money. I'm with you on this.

There has been a few ideas going around. But, not really sure the truth will ever come out. And, maybe it shouldn't. Who knows. That was just a crazy incident all around. It's great to still see people with the "55 Halo" logo as their avatar/profile pic on FB. He touched a ton of people in such a short lifetime. I'm also doing a panel called "The Crawfords, Oklahoma's First Family of Racing". It's going to be a great one as well.
